Operating instructions
POWER PEAK 400
Introduction
The Power Peak 400 is a fast charger for use with 4-cell to 7-cell NiCd and NiMH batteries.
The capacity range is around 0.25 to 3.0 Ah, which covers all standard modelling types.
A slide switch is provided for selecting the battery type (NiCd/NiMH).
For setting the charge current the unit features two current ranges (Low/High), each offe-
ring 6 selectable charge currents. The range is set using a push-button. The charge pro-
cess is terminated automatically when the battery is fully charged. The unit charges packs
using high current pulses which ensure that the battery is charged to maximum possible
capacity. The unit is designed for use with a 12 V lead-acid battery.
Safety notes
-
Do not set up the charger and batteries on a flammable surface, and never leave the
unit operating unsupervised.
-
Take care to maintain correct polarity at all the Power Peak 400's inputs and outputs.
-
Avoid short-circuits, especially shorts between the crocodile clips when a NiCd / NiMH
battery is connected.
-
Protect the unit from damp.
-
Don't subject the charger to direct sunshine, and do not cover it.
-
Use only packs of fast-charge cells which have been properly balanced (equal state of
charge).
-
Do not charge batteries which are already hot; allow them to cool down to ambient tem-
perature before recharging.
-
Packs must consist of cells of the same make, type and capacity.
-
Do not wire two packs together in parallel for charging.
-
Observe the battery manufacturer's recommendations.

Using the charger
-
Connect the crocodile clips to a 12 V lead-acid battery; take great care over correct
polarity (red = positive / black = negative). The green LED for the „Low" current range
flashes, and the red LED for the charge current 50 mA glows.
-
If neither LED lights up, this may indicate that the crocodile clips are connected with
reverse polarity, or that the 12 V lead-acid battery is flat. If you suspect reverse polari-
ty, check the charger's integral 7.5 A fuse.
If the red LEDs for the charge currents 50 mA and 300 mA flash as well as the green
LED, the voltage of the lead-acid battery is less than 11V.
-
Do not connect the rechargeable battery yet.
-
Move the slide switch to the NiCd or NiMH position to suit the battery to be charged.
-
A flashing green LED indicates the default current range „Low". You can now set the
charge current within the range 50 ... 300 mA by pressing the Set button repeatedly. A
red LED indicates the current range you select.
-
If you wish to charge the battery at a higher rate, the current range „High" must be sel-
ected. Hold the push-button pressed in (around 2 seconds) until the LED for the „High"
current range flashes, and a beep sounds in confirmation.
-
You can now select the appropriate charge current in the „High" range using the same
procedure.
The unit is now ready for charging 4-cell to 7-cell NiCd and NiMH batteries.
