GAFF INSPECTION
Climbers (pole and tree) must have properly shaped gaffs.
Perform gaff inspection prior to each climb.
GAFF SHARPENING
Never grind gaffs using a powered tool, only manually sharpen gaff with a flat file.
Secure climber tightly into a vise (recommendation: wrap climber with protective
material to prevent scratching) with gaff underside exposed.
Use a 6-inch flat mill file along the surface of the gaff starting at the heel and
drawing toward the tip.
Do not cross-file.
Keep file fat on the gaff and clean file frequently.
Never file gaff tip to needlepoint. An improperly sharpened gaff can cause cut-out,
a fall, and serious injury or death.
When complete perform the Plane & Pole Cut out Test.
