Radio sets of earlier design
which are not equipped with a standard tape recorder socket or diode
output socket can easily be equipped with the former according to
the wiring diagram at left. Any specialist will be able to add this
socket to your radio set at moderate cost.
When recording from a microphone
please bear in mind that even the best microphone cannot produce
a satisfactory recording over too great a distance from the source
of sound. In this case. secorydary noise which normally is ignored by
the human ear, will also be recorded
and its reproduction.
The acoustic characteristics
the recording is made are also of great influence on the outcome of
the recording. Rooms having bare walls. so-called live rooms, are
not fit for microphone recording.
Under certain conditions, good recordings may be obtained with the
microphone being placed at a greater than the recommended distance.
This does not indicate microphone
given conditions, such as the noise level and the acoustic character-
istics of the recording
room.
When recording out of doors, it is advisable to use a windscreen for
the microphone. If a windscreen is not at hand. a piece of lightweight
fabric, such as a handkerchief or a chiffon shawl, can be used to form
a makeshift
wind
protection.
Recommended distances between the microphone and the source Of
sound
are as follows:
Speech:
12— 20 inches; if the distance is shorter, a good microphone will
overemphasize
the low frequencies.
Vocal
Solo:
approx. 3 feet; a shorter distance will cause exaggeration of the
breathing noise.
