1 Technical description of the Pre-Installation Box (PI box)

The Pre-Installation Box allows uncomplicated connection of customer premises equipment
to the optical fiber cables. Mounting of the PI box and its connection to the optical fiber lines
will be realized by service personnel, whereas final installation of the CPE can be carried out
by the broadband subscriber himself / herself, by simply „clicking-on" the unit on the Pre-
Installation Box. The user can promptly enter the world of high-speed Internet applications:
depends on CPE bidirectional at up to 1 Gbps.

Selecting the place of installation / Fixing the device

The PI box has been designed for in-house use in closed rooms as wall-mount unit. The
PI box should be placed nearby the optical fiber(s) running from the Access Switch / CATV
Headend resp. Provider and next to a mains socket (for CPE). Since the FOS devices are de-
termined for continuous operation, they have no mains switch. For disconnection from the
electricity grid, just remove the plug-in power supply unit. So the wall power supply should
always be easily accessible.
Prior to wall mounting, make sure that there are no concealed supply lines (power, water, gas,
telephone, coaxial or fiber cable) at the intended installation place. During operation, the FOS
devices are markedly warming up, but this operating temperature is not dangerous at all.
However, to provide for unimpeded heat dissipation, the FOS devices and therefore the PI
