sound level is to be monitored, move it to a dif-
ferent place after measuring a reference value, e . g .
to the edge of the dance floor . In this case, proceed
as described in chapter 6 .2 .
5.1 Calibration for measurements made directly
at the place where the sound level is to be
monitored
1) Set up the measuring microphone at the place where
the sound level is to be monitored . If re quired, extend
the connection cable with an BNC connection cable .
2) Call up the calibration window with the menu item
Program  Calibrate or with the key F2 .
3) Insert the program CD into the CD player of the audio
system and play title No . 2 (1 kHz sinusoidal tone) .
However, if pink noise is reproduced when playing
title No . 2, select title No . 3
4) Adjust the volume of the audio system so that the
measuring box will display a value between 85 and
95 dB . Previous experience has shown that the value
will vary by 0 .1 – 0 .2 dB . Take down the average value .
Important: Do not change the position of the
microphone and the adjustments of the sound card
anymore, and do not change the volume of the
system before the calibration has been completed .
5) Click Calibrate and wait for the program to re quest
an input .
6) In the input window, enter the value of the meas-
uring box you have taken down (accuracy of the
input: one decimal place) . Then confirm your input .
7) Close the calibration window . If the position of the
microphone is changed, calibrate the system again .
5.2 Calibration for measurements not made
directly at the place where the sound level
is to be monitored
1) Set up the measuring microphone at the place where
the sound level is to be monitored . If re quired, extend
the connection cable with an BNC connection cable .
2) Call up the calibration window with the menu item
Program  Calibrate or with the key F2 .
3) Insert the program CD into the CD player of the audio
system and play title No . 1 (pink noise) . How ever, if
no sound or an indefinable noise is repro duced when
playing title No . 1, select title No . 2¹ .
4) Adjust the volume of the audio system so that the
measuring box will display a value between 85 and
95 dB . Previous experience has shown that the value
will vary by 0 .1 – 0 .2 dB . Take down the average value .
Important: Do not change the adjustments of the
sound card anymore, and do not change the vol-
ume of the system before the calibration has been
completed .
Some CD players will also count the software "dBmess Disco"
1
stored on the CD as a title (in this case as title No . 1) and will
show a total title number of 3 .
.

5) Then set up the microphone at the desired position .
Important: Always ensure that, during the ordinary
course of the event, there is nothing between the
speaker and the microphone which was not there
during the calibration, e . g . there must be no persons
in this area . This will affect the measurement, and
the system will show a volume which is too low .
Hint: Do not place the microphone at a distance of
less than 1 m from a speaker, otherwise the system
may easily be overloaded . Also see Clipping under
item "Anschluss" of the German online help (to be
called up with the key F1) .
6) Click Calibrate and wait for the program to
request an input .
7) In the input window, enter the value of the meas-
uring box you have taken down (accuracy of the
input: one decimal place) . Then confirm your input .
8) Close the calibration window . If another place is to
be acoustically monitored or if the position of the
microphone is changed, calibrate the system again .

6 Display Options

1) The program is preset in such a way that the colour
of the display background both for the short-time
sound level (displayed in the upper part of the screen)
and for the longer Leq
to yellow from 85 dB and to red from 90 dB . These
threshold values can be defined as desired under
"Setup" . For the change from yellow to red, how-
ever, the maximum value recommended is 98 dB .
2) The bar graph above the two large dB windows can
be switched on and off with the key F6 . Apart from
the Leq, the short-time peak levels will also be dis-
played here .
Leq = energy-equivalent average value of the level
