X Total water hardness [°dH]
Y softened water volume [l]
1 Example: softened water volume at 20 °dH
Example 1 (e.g. integral ventilation unit)
The regional water supply utility informs you that the total
hardness is 20 °dH. The water should be softened to 0 °dH.
Heat transfer occurs via an underfloor heating system; the
heating output is 9 kW. As the system volume is unknown, it
is determined approximately (see table in chapter "Calculating
the system volume"):
9 kW x 20 l/kW = 180 l system capacity
As we want to soften the heating water from 20 °dH to 0 °dH,
according to the formula for calculating the softened water
volume, this gives a softened water volume per cartridge of:
6000 [l °dH] / 20 °dH = 300 l
This means that one cartridge is sufficient for initial filling.
Example 2 (e.g. heat pump)
The regional water supply utility informs you that the total
hardness is 15 °dH. The water should be softened to 0 °dH. Heat
transfer occurs via an underfloor heating system with buffer
cylinder; the heating output is 14 kW. As the system volume is
unknown, it is determined approximately (see table in chapter
"Calculating the system volume"):
14 kW x 20 l/kW = 280 l
As a buffer cylinder with a capacity of 200 l is installed in this
case, this gives a total system capacity of 480 l.
As we want to soften the heating water from 15 °dH to 0 °dH,
according to the formula for calculating the softened water
volume, this gives a softened water volume per cartridge of:
6000 [l °dH] / 15 °dH = 400 l
This means that two cartridges are required for initial filling.

6.3 First fill

f slowly open the inlet ball valve fitted on site. This puts the
water softening device under pressure.
f slowly open the air vent screw in the filter head. This vents
the device.
f slowly open the ball valve at the outlet of the water sof-
tening device.
f If leaks occur, check the affected component and gaskets.
f If the previously calculated water volume per cartridge is
reached, replace the filter cartridge.
6.3.1 Replacing the filter cartridge
f Close the ball valve at the inlet of the water softening de-
vice.
f Close the ball valve at the outlet of the water softening
device.
f open the sampling tap to relieve the system pressure.
f Unscrew the lower filter candle section.
f Remove the old filter cartridge.
This cartridge, including the resin, can then be disposed of as
household waste. Note that a suitably sized waste container is
required for disposal (filter cartridge length: 52 cm).
f Flush the lower filter candle section with clear water.
1
1 Gasket
f Insert the new filter cartridge. When doing so, ensure that
it is the right way round.
f Check the integrity of the sealing elements comprising
o-ring and cartridge sealing washer.
f Insert the o-ring and cartridge sealing washer.
f secure the lower filter candle section using the filter key.
f Check the device for leaks.
