4-ports DSL WLAN router
Item-No. 97 48 65
Intended Use
The DSL router is used to facilitate Internet access to multiple computers simultane-
ously by means of a single DSL connection. The link of the computer to the router may
be carried out by means of an integrated network port (RJ45, 10/100MBit) or WLAN
(802.11b/g, 54MBit).
This product complies with the applicable national and European specifications. All
company names and product designations contained herein are trademarks of the
respective owners. All rights reserved.

Safety Instructions
The guarantee is rendered invalid when damage is incurred as a
result of non-compliance with the operating instructions! We will not
assume any responsibility for current damage caused in conse-
quence!
We shall not accept liability for damage to property or personal
injury caused by improper handling or non-compliance with the
safety instructions. The warranty is voided in these cases.
The unauthorized conversion and/or modification of the product is inad-
missible because of safety and approval reasons (CE).
The design of the mains plug complies with safety class 2. As a voltage
source for the mains plug only a proper power socket (230V~/50Hz) of the
mains domestic power system may be used.
The product is not a toy. Devices powered by mains voltage must be kept
out of reach of children. Particular care must therefore be exercised if chil-
dren are around.
Do not leave packaging material unattended. It may become a dangerous
toy for children.
The product is intended for use in dry indoor locations, it must not get
damp or wet! There is a risk of a fatal electric shock!
Handle the product carefully and do not drop it. Knocks, blows or even a
fall from a low height can damage it.
Connection
• Screw the supplied WLAN antenna down on the rear of the access-point.
• Connect the „WAN" port by means of a 1:1 connected network cable to your DSL
modem (with RJ45 network output); the DSL modem should be connected to a splitter.
• Four network ports (1-4) are available for the connection of one computer each.
Connect one of the network ports by means of a 1:1 connected network cable to the
connector of the network interface card. Use an additonal switch if more than 4
computers should be connected.
• Connect the housing to the mains voltage using the supplied plug-in power supply
unit (230V~/50Hz). The router implements a self test now (LED's are blinking). Wait
a while until the self test has finished.
• Switch on your PC and wait until loading of the operating system is completed.
Setting up the router should unconditionally be carried out through one of
the four network ports and not through WLAN.
Configurating the computer
To access the router the set-up of the network protocol „TCP/IP" of your network card
(„LAN connection") is required (basic setting in case of Windows XP or Vista basic).
Version 05/07
Moreover, no IP address may be allocated to the network card, the router takes care
of this automatically (DHCP server) in a later stage. Normally this is also pre-set in
°
Windows XP/Vista.
The remaining options should be switched off and ideally be in the basic setting after
installing Windows (e.g. „Deactivate DNS" or „Deactivate WINS resolution").
Setting up the router, example for Windows XP
• Start your webbrowser, e.g. the Internet Explorer (the following description relates
to the Internet Explorer). Break off searching for the pre-set website.
• In case the window „Assistant for the Internet access" does not appear, select
„Internet options" under „Tools".
Click on to „Connections" and subsequently on
the „Set-up..." button.
• In the window „Assistant for new connections" you click on to „Next >".
• Select „Make Internet connection" (normally already pre-set) and click on to „Next
>".
• Click on „Make connection manually" and subsequently on „Next >".
• Select „Connection through a continuously active broadband connection", click on
to „Next >".
• Finally, click on „Complete". Thereafter the Internet Explorer is ready to co-operate
with an external router.
• Close the Internet Explorer and open it again.
• Enter the address line: http://192.168.10.1
• Dependent on the required setting the router can now be configurated.
Handling
Operation is only permitted in dry, enclosed rooms. The product must not
become damp or wet, risk of a fatal electric shock!
Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold
into a warm room. The condensation water generated could destroy the
product.
Allow the product to reach room temperature. This process may take
several hours. Only then can the power supply plug be connected to the
mains voltage and the router used.
Make sure the insulation of the whole product is neither damaged nor
destroyed. The housing must not be opened! Any maintenance or repair
work must only be performed by authorised personnel.
Check the product for damage before each use!
If you detect any damage, DO NOT connect the product to the mains vol-
tage! This is a mortal danger!
Safe operation must be presumed to be no longer possible, if
- the device exhibits visible damage,
- the device is no longer functional and
- the device was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of
time or
- the device was exposed to extraordinary stress caused by transport.
If you do not use the product for a longer period, unplug the power cord.
Bear in mind that when internet-access is no longer possible, the network
connection between the computers does not function either!
The following unfavourable conditions are to be avoided at the location of
the device or during transport:
- Excessive humidity or dampness
- extreme cold or heat
- dust or combustible gases, vapours or solvents
- strong vibrations
- strong magnetic fields such as those found in the vicinity of machinery or
loudspeakers
When setting up the product, make sure that the cable is neither bent nor
squeezed.
Tips & Notes
• The indicated maximum data transfer rate of 54MBit (802.11b/g) for WLAN, which
means about 6.5MByte/s, is never acquired in reality. This is due to a different trans-
fer mode system, a transmission error, the distance between WLAN stations, etc.
Also while using the 10/100MBit connections the full theoretical data transfer rate of
10 resp. 100MBit is not acquired.
• WLAN network connections should be encoded to avoid unauthorized access, e.g.
to your WLAN-DSL-router. You should use „WPA" instead of „WEP" for encoding, if
it is available, because „WEP" is no longer sufficient protection against unauthori-
zed access.
• The wireless coverage depends on the ambient conditions, and can be restricted by:
- High-frequency interference of all types (computers, monitors, mobile phones)
- Any kind of construction and vegetation
- Conductive metals that are close to or inside the device, e.g. cables, radiators,
metalized insulated glass panes, reinforced concrete floors, etc.
- Influence of the radiation characteristics of the aerials through the distance of the
transmitter or receiver to the conductive areas or objects (also to the human body
or floor).
- Broadband disturbance in urban areas that reduces the signal-to-noise ratio; the
signal is not recognized because of the „noise"
- Irradiation of deficiently shielded electronic devices, e.g. computers operated
openly, or similar.
- Movements from receiver/transmitter
- Too small distance from transmitter & receiver
• Dependent on the Internet provider you are using for DSL, further configuration
should be carried out in the DSL router.
• You will find more detailed information in the extensive English instruction manual.
Please note:
While using a router in general we expressly advise the use of a flat rate
or at least a volume tariff (e.g. 5GByte/monthly). The automatic discon-
nection after a certain time of idleness (e.g. after 10 minutes, in the router
e.g. called „Idle time-out") may not always function correctly.
This means that, regardless of a setting in the router, the Internet con-
nection is not disconnected and costs continue to incur, even when no
Internet browser software runs or all connected computers are switched
off. This can lead to very high costs (several hundred Euros monthly!).
Even when the router does not show this behaviour, a firmware update or
the installation of certain software on the computer could change this.
Causes could be e.g. queries of exchange programmes, update requests
from Windows, anti virus programmes etc. or time server queries from the
router resp. from Windows.
In case of doubt, disconnect the router from the mains voltage or the DSL
modem when it is not being used!
