Congratulations on your purchase of this EMPHASER Monolith bass reflex cabinet subwoofer.
Please read the following connection and adjustment instructions carefully before using this
unit to fully exploit its sound potential.
This EMPHASER Monolith subwoofer is based on the bass-reflex operating principle, with
the following main features:

BOX PLACING
The Monolith enclosure subwoofers are laid out for placement in the trunk, just behind the
rear seat incline and acoustically tuned to this position in the vehicle. Care must be taken to
ensure that the slot port is not covered; a distance of at least 10 cm to the trunk side wall is
necessary for optimum results.
CONNECTION TO AMPLIFIER
The Monolith cabinet subwoofers are provided with a double voice coil with 2 x 2 ohms nominal
impedance. This allows connection in the serial 4 Ohm connection mode as shown on the
terminal, the 2 x 2 Ohm stereo mode for operation with 2 channel amplifiers or in parallel mode
with 1 Ohm impedance for very powerful and 1 Ohm stable mono amplifiers.
The parallel 1 Ohm connection has a 3 dB higher efficiency compared to the serial 4 Ohm
connection. Please note that an amplifier in 1 Ohm mode requires an absolutely stable power
supply. This includes a powerful battery, a sufficiently high cross section of the power cables
and, under certain circumstances, the use of buffer capacitors. A clipping amplifier leads
to overheating of the voice coil and in the worst case can cause the voice coil wire to burn
through. A burnt voice coil is not covered by warranty or guarantee.
CAUTION: Make sure you do not accidentally connect one of the two double voice coils with
reversed polarity. Due to opposite electrical polarity, the magnetic driving forces in the air gap
cancel each other out, so the subwoofer does not produce any sound, but reactive power will
be produced nevertheless, i.e. the voice coil burns up within a short time!

SETTINGS
Bass reflex systems require a low-pass filtered signal for optimum sound quality. The low-pass
filtration is achieved by the active crossover on the amplifier (bass channel or via the radio's
DSP, which controls the sub-line out. Usual slopes are from 12 dB/oct to 24dB/oct.
The crossover frequency of the low-pass filter for the subwoofer and the high-pass filter of
the component or coaxial systems should be set in advance to approx. 80Hz, which is a good
starting point for testing the acoustically correct polarity of the subwoofer.
CORRECT PHASE POLARITY: Due to the difference in the distance between the sound
components from the loudspeaker systems in the door and the subwoofer in the boot, the
better sounding or more powerful connection variant should be tested by reversing the polar-
ity of the subwoofer connection cable at the terminal plug. The assessment is always carried
out in the driver's seat, with the boot or tailgate closed. The fine-tuning of the bass channel
phase can - if available - be further optimized with the phase shift control on the amplifier or
a time correction on the radio/processor.
NOTE: Changing the slope of the low or high pass requires a new listening pass for "correct
connection polarity" at the terminal.
