5. Feathers
Ducks and geese have down
feathers that are extremely
fluffy to keep them warm
and comfy. They are so fluffy
because the little hairs on
the feathers branch out
further and further into tiny
ends. Can you see the hairs? Try
to compare down feathers to other types of feathers.
What differences do you see?

6. Mosquito larvae

If you look at puddles or buckets
of water in the summer, you
can often see little squirmy
creatures swimming around
in them. They contain
thousands of small insect
larvae. Often these larvae will
grow into mosquitos. Scoop out
some water with larvae using a glass, and then try to
catch a few of them from the glass into your pipette.
Now you can place them on the object holder. Can you
see the fine hairs on their bodies? These stop them
from sinking to the bottom. The larvae don't have any
legs, and they can only swim by wriggling their whole
bodies. After your research, release the larvae back into
the water where you found them.

7. Blossoms

If you look carefully at a blossom,
you can see that it is made of
different parts. It has pretty
colorful petals, stamens (the
little sticks with yellow ends
in the middle of the flower),
sepals (that look like a little
crown on the underside of the
flower), and the ovary (a small round part just under
the flower that will later turn into a fruit). Blossoms
such as dandelions or daisies are special, because they
are made of many tiny blossoms. There are small thin
blossoms in the middle, and larger blossoms with long
colored petals around the outside. Can you recognize
them?
8. Grasshoppers
The legs of grasshoppers are very
interesting. They can use them
to make noises. Have a close
look at a grasshopper leg. Do
you see the saw-like
structure? Grasshoppers can
rub their back legs against
their wings and make a noise,
similar to the way a violin works. Male grasshoppers
use this to attract female grasshoppers. Important!
Remember that grasshoppers are living creatures that
must be treated with respect. Only study animals that
are already dead when you find them.
9. Ladybugs
Ladybugs are not just pretty to
look at—they are also very
useful! They eat plant lice
that would otherwise
destroy many plants. Have a
good look at the bug from
above. Are the dots on their
wings perfectly round? If
you come across a live
ladybug, don't bother it
too much. When ladybugs
feel threatened,
they excrete a
yellow, stinky
liquid.
