The Smartscope will let you have a close-up look at lots of things around you. These instructions give you some
tips on how to use the Smartscope for microscopy, but after that you can keep exploring. Use the included poster
as a start for your journey of discovery. Have fun!
Studying water droplets
Use the pipette to
place a droplet of the
water you would like to
study on the object
holder.
Place the cover plate
on top of the droplet
and set it down
carefully.
If you think there are bigger organisms in the water,
you can place small balls of putty on the corners of
the cover plate to act as spacers. You don't want to
squash the organisms!
If you accidentally used too much water, you can
absorb some of it with tissue paper.
Now place the object holder under the lens and
illuminate it from below.

Studying parts of insects

If you would like
to study only a
wing or a leg of a
dead insect, you
should carefully
separate it from the insect using the tweezers, and
place it in the object holder on its own.
Transparent objects such as wings should be
illuminated from below, and non-transparent objects
such as legs should be illuminated from above.

Studying insects and spiders

Important!
You should only study animals that are already dead
when you find them. Living creatures must be treated
with respect and you should not kill them.
If you want to study a dead insect, carefully place it
on the object holder using tweezers.
Always illuminate insects from above.
Live ants can be studied, too.
Look outside for a place where you see ants. Place a
small drop of honey on your object holder. This will
attract the ants.
Now you can trap
the ants inside the
petri dish and
study them in the
Smartscope.
Don't forget to
release the ants in the place where you found
them after you are done!
You should throw away the honey that you used in the
experiment.

Studying other objects

Place the object
on the object
holder and slide it
under the lens.
Illuminate the
object from above,
or, if the object is
transparent, you can try illuminating it from below.
