Im Spätsommer 1953 trat der US-Importeur von Daimler-Benz an den
Unternehmensvorstand mit der Bitte heran, zwei unterschiedlich kon-
zipierte Sportwagen anzufertigen, um das US-Geschäft anzukurbeln.
Daimler sagte für den Februar 1954 die Studien für die beiden Typen
zu. Und tatsächlich begeisterten beide Fahrzeuge ab dem 6.2. 1954,
also nur knapp fünf Monate später, die Besucher und die Presse auf
der Internationalen Motor Sports Show. Der ebenfalls präsentierte 300
SL Flügeltürer war bezüglich Serienreife sehr weit fortgeschritten, an
dem 190 SL nahm Daimler aber kleine Veränderungen vor, um sich
optisch dem 300 SL noch mehr anzugleichen. Da der 190 SL auf der
Plattform des 1953 erschienen 180 Ponton basierte, wurde die stilisti-
sche Anpassung vorwiegend an einigen Bauteilen wie Kühlergrill, hin-
teren Kotflügeln, Armaturenbrett oder Blinkerleuchten vorgenom-
men. Das Sportcoupé wurde auf dem Automobilsalon in Genf im März
1955 im überarbeiteten Design präsentiert, schon im Mai begann die
Serienproduktion. Das Fahrzeug brillierte mit seinem exklusiven, schnit-
tigen Design, eignete sich zudem als sportlich komfortables Alltags-
und Reisefahrzeug und bot sogar recht anspruchslose Serientechnik.
Auch das Interieur überzeugte mit einer für Sportwagen ungewöhn-
lich luxuriösen Ausstattung. Ferner besaß der Wagen, ebenfalls mit
Hinblick auf den 300 SL, seinem „großen Bruder", einen neuen, lei-
stungsstarken Vierzylindermotor mit 1,9 Litern Hubraum und 105 PS
Leistung. Die Popularität des bis zu 170 Stundenkilometer schnellen
190 SL drückt sich auch in der Stückzahl aus: in den acht Jahren seiner
Produktion, bis zum 8. Februar 1963, verließen stolze 25.881 Fahrzeuge
das Band. Das formschöne Fahrzeug fuhren unter anderem Grace
Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Alfred Hitchcock und Ringo Starr.

In the late summer of 1953 the US Daimler-Benz importer approached
the company board with a request that they create two different
sports car concepts in order to crank up sales in the US. Daimler prom-
ised the studies for two types for February 1954. And in fact, a mere
five months later on 6.2.1954, the two vehicles enthused both visitors
and press at the International Motor Sports Show. The 300 SL gull-
wing door model that was also presented was sufficiently far
advanced to go into series production, however Daimler made slight
modifications to the 190 SL in order to make it look more like the 300
SL. As the 190 SL was based on the platform of the 180 Ponton that
came out in 1953, the stylistic adjustments were made chiefly to com-
ponents such as the radiator grille, rear mudguards, dashboard and
indicator lights. The sports coupé in the revised design was presented
at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1955 and went into series pro-
duction in May. The car with its exclusive streamlined design was a star
that was equally appropriate as a sporty comfortable all-rounder and
touring car offering discreet production technology. The interior, with
unusually luxurious fittings for a sports car, was equally impressive. In
addition the car, like its "big brother" the 300 SL had a powerful new
4 cylinder 1.9 litre 105 bhp engine. The popularity of the 190 SL with a
top speed of 170 km/h is evident from the sales figures: in the eight
years up to 8th February 1963 that it was in production, no less than
25,881 cars rolled off the lines. Among the people who drove this
beautiful car were Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Alfred Hitchcock and
Ringo Starr.
