ETT-6 step controllers are used for step-by-step
activation of electric heating coils or
refrigeration compressors. They are also ideal
for staged control of fans, cooling packs,
pumps, compressors and boilers.
ETT-6 is particularly suitable for ventilation
systems in which the supply air temperature is
controlled by sectional electric heating coils or
several refrigeration compressors.
ETT-6 can be connected to an EFS power
controller, thus providing accurate infinitely
variable regulation of very large electric heating
coils over the entire output range.

ETT-6-11 Step controller with 6 relays, 230 V AC
ETT-6-31 Step controller with 6 relays, 24 V AC
FUNCTION
ETT-6 is a microprocessor controlled step
controller with 6 potential-free switching
contacts for the sequential activation of
electrical loads. The controller is set up for the
load concerned by means of DIP switches.

binary distribution (1:2:4:8:8:8 / 1:2:4:8:16:32).
Any number of steps between 2 and 6 can be
selected and the maximum number can be

increased to 12 by interconnecting two ETT-6

controllers. The controllers have a built-in
INCREMENTAL function which ensures that the
activation of individual relays is evenly
distributed, thus preventing rapid wear of
specific sections and prolonging system service
life.
ETT-6 is controlled by either a 0-10 V DC signal
or a 3-point control signal. The controllers have
an integrated proportional 0-10 V or PWM
output capable of regulating a connected power
controller or frequency converter, thus providing
infinitely adjustable control between individual
steps. ETT-6 has a built-in fan operation
function, allowing a fan to be controlled
optimally together with an electric heating
battery.

INSTALLATION

ETT-6 step controllers are designed to be
mounted on a DIN rail inside an enclosure with
a suitable rating. Control signal cables may be
up to 50 m long. Control signal cables should
not be run parallel to mains carrying cables as
voltage signals may be produced that can
interfere with step controller function.
SETTINGS
ETT-6 must be set up for the application
concerned by setting the DIP switches in blocks
1 and 2 (figs 1 & 2).
Selecting the control signal
ETT-6 must be connected to an external
controller or control unit. The "INPUT" DIP
switch (fig. 2) must be set to either 0-10 V
control signal (DC) (fig. 3) or 3-point control
(STEP) (fig. 4).
If 3-point control is selected, activating STEP
ON will cause ETT-6 to move one step upwards
whenever the change-over time has elapsed
(fig. 5). Similarly, activating STEP OFF will cause
ETT-6 to move one step downwards. If neither
input is activated, the current step is retained.

Setting the change-over time between steps
The required change-over time between two
successive steps can be infinitely adjusted
between 2 and 20 seconds using the "TIME
SET" potentiometer (fig. 1). The range can be
changed from 2-20 to 20-200 seconds using
the "SCALE" DIP switch (fig. 2). If the "TIME
SET" potentiometer is turned fully
counterclockwise, the change-over time
becomes 0. If binary load is also selected, the
relays switch once the 0-10 V signal has
become stable. To avoid overshoot, the
change-over time should be set so that it is
possible to shift between all the steps
concerned within the response time of the
external controller. If for example 4 relays are
used and a change-over time of 10 seconds
has been selected, it will take ETT-6 a total of
40 seconds to shift from 0 to max. output.
Setting the load type
The two "FUNCTION" DIP switches (fig. 2) must
be set for the load concerned. For uniform
outputs (1:1:1:1:1:1), "NORM" and "INC" must
be selected (fig. 6). If incremental mode is
required, so that each relay is activated a similar
number of times, "SPEC" and "INC" must be
selected. For (1:2:4:8:8:8) binary steps,
"NORMAL" and "BIN" must be selected, while
"SPEC" and "BIN" must be selected for
(1:2:4:8:16:32) binary steps (fig. 7).
Selecting the proportional control output
signal
If the proportional control output is used, the
"OUTPUT" DIP switch (fig. 2) must be set for
the required type of output signal. The signal is
used for stepless control between individual
steps when for example a power controller (figs
6 & 7) or frequency converter (figs 8 and 9) is
connected. The result is fully proportional,
highly accurate control over the entire range
(fig. 10). The output can be set to 0-10 V (DC) or
pulse width modulation (PWM) (fig. 11). PWM
can be used together with a standard solid-
state relay. When PWM is selected, the period
time must be set using the "TIME SET"
potentiometer.
Extending the controller for up to 12 relays
If two ETT-6 controllers are interconnected, a
step controller system with from 7 to 12 linear
steps is obtained (fig. 12). The one ETT-6
functions as master and its proportional control
output signal is used to control the other ETT-6
as slave. Proportional control is still possible
using the output on the ETT-6 slave. The DIP
switch must be set to "MASTER" on the master
(fig. 2) and to "SLAVE" on the slave, thus
rendering the other DIP switches on the slave
inoperable. Binary operation is not possible
when two ETT-6 controllers are interconnected.
Setting the number of steps
The required number of steps is set on the "D C
B A" DIP switch (fig. 2). If "normal" or
"incremental" operation has been selected, the
number of steps corresponds to the set number
of relays. If "binary" operation has been
selected, the number of steps is given by the
number of possible combinations of the set
number of relays. For example, 4 relays give 2
= 16 steps, the first of which consists of all
relays being deactivated.
Fan operation
A fan can be switched On/Off by relay 1 (figs 13
& 14) by setting DIP switch 6 "FAN MODE RE1"
(fig. 2) to fan operation (on). The fan will then be
started by a 0.2 V DC control signal, ensuring
that the fan is always started before the heating
is activated. Relay 1 remains On for 3 minutes
after the control signal has fallen below 0.2 V in
order that the fan can cool the heating battery. If
relay 1 is not used to operate a fan, DIP switch
6 should be set to off.
