Installing an Additional CPU Module

Caution – When you unpack the new UltraSPARC-III module from its packing
carton, it is important that you observe the following handling precautions to avoid
damaging the module:
When you lift the module from the packing carton in its antistatic bag, use both
hands to support the module along its short sides.
After you remove the module from its antistatic bag, handle it only by its captive
screws.
Do not touch the connectors on the bottom edge of the module, which can be
easily bent or damaged by improper handling. Do not remove the plastic cover
from the connectors until you are ready to install the module.
Do not grip the module by the heat sinks, which can shift if handled improperly.
1. Power off the system, remove the access panel, and attach an antistatic wrist strap
as described in "Preparing for Installation" on page en-24.
2. Remove the filler panel from the unused CPU slot by pushing its tabs inward and
lifting it straight upward.
3. Remove the CPU shroud cover by pushing its retainer clips inward and lifting it
straight upward.
4. Remove the plastic cover that is over the CPU connector on the motherboard.
5. Remove the plastic covers on the CPU module connectors.
6. Hold the CPU module with its heat-sink surface facing the system feet (see
).

7. Carefully insert the CPU module into the CPU shroud, aligning the CPU screws
with the screw-holes on the CPU shroud.
8. Use your fingers to start the CPU screws into the screw holes. Stop when the
screws are snug.
Caution – Use the torque-indicator driver provided to ensure proper tightening of
the CPU module screws. Under-tightening the screws can cause system booting
failures; over-tightening the screws can damage connector pins on the motherboard.
When the resistance of the screw closes the gap on the torque-indicator driver, the
screw is properly tightened.
