Cleaning and Low-Level Disinfection
OR trunk cables must be cleaned and disinfected before being reused on
another patient. Use only recommended cleaning agents and disinfectants
listed below. Use of any others may cause damage or reduce cable
lifetime, or cause safety risks to patients.
Recommended Cleaning Agents
- Mild soaps - Phosphates

Clean the trunk cable following instructions supplied with the cleaning agent. Do not
immerse the cable connectors.

Disinfect the trunk cable following instructions supplied with the disinfectant, again being
careful to avoid immersing the cable connectors.

Thoroughly rinse the trunk cable in water, then wipe it dry with a clean cloth, leaving it to
dry completely.

Inspect the cable after it has dried. If any damage or deterioration is noticed, dispose of
the cable immediately.
Sterilization
Sterilized only when necessary, as determined by your care facility's
policy. Use Ethylene Oxide (EtO) gas sterilization only. Do not autoclave.
Be sure to clean and disinfect the cable before sterilization and to follow
all safety precautions regarding aeration after EtO exposure.
Disposal
Any trunk cable showing signs of physical or electrical deterioration or
failure should be disinfected, decontaminated, and disposed of according
to local laws regarding the disposal of hospital waste.
