Start-up
After connecting the docking station (either via USB or via eSATA), and after the insertion of a
hard disk, the docking station can be activated (switch position „I" = „ON").
Windows automatically recognises new hardware when they are first detected and installs the
necessary drivers (integrated components of the operating system).
If the hard disk is completely new, and if the hard disk is not partitioned and for-
matted, it will not appear in the Windows file manager. This is normal. See section,
„Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Drive".
Attention - important information for eSATA operation:
Depending on the SATA controller used, or on the motherboard, the docking sta-
tion or SATA hard disk might not be recognised if it is plugged in with the operating
system running.
If the „new" hard disk is not shown in the Windows XP/Vista computer administra-
tion; then partitioning and formatting of a new/empty hard disk drive is not possible!
Unfortunately, in this case, your SATA controller or your motherboard do not sup-
port a plug-and-play SATA hard disk. You will have to shutdown the operating sys-
tem completely and restart the computer before the docking station with the insert-
ed SATA hard disk is recognised.
If the hard disk is already partitioned/formatted the hard disk will now appear in the
Windows file manager. If the hard disk, however, is empty/not partitioned, please
refer to the following section „Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Drive".
Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Drive
If a new hard disk is inserted in the docking station, it has to be partitioned first and
then formatted before it can be use, e.g. appear in the Windows file manager.
• This can be done easily in Windows XP (click on „administration" in the system settings, then
„computer administration", „data storage" and finally on „drive administration").
Then, select the correct hard disk drive and create a new partition. It then has to be formatted.
The procedure is quite similar in Windows Vista.
• In Windows 98SE/ME however, the DOS commands „FDISK" (for partitioning) and „FORMAT"
(for formatting) are required.
Start the MSDOS prompt and enter „FDISK". Under menu option „5. Changing of current hard
drive", the external hard disk drive has to be selected. Example: If you only have one internal
hard disk drive, select hard drive „2". Afterwards, a primary partition can be created.
Exit FDISK by pressing the ESC button and reboot your computer.
Afterwards the partition on the new hard disk can be formatted, either via the Windows file
manager or with the „FORMAT" command from the MSDOS prompt (ensure it is the new hard
disk that is formatted and not the already existing hard disk drive, or partition, data loss!).
Cleaning
First, turn off the docking station and extract the inserted hard disk, if necessary. Disconnect the
wall plug transformer from the mains socket.
Use a clean, dry soft cloth for cleaning. Do not use any aggressive cleaning agents as these may
result in discoloration of the enclosure.
Tips & Notes
a) USB operation
• USB2.0 devices are backwards compatible. This means that the USB2.0 integrated in the hard
disk drive can also function with conventional „slow" USB1.1 ports, but then only at the maxi-
mum USB1.1 speed (effective max. ca. 1MByte/s).
With USB2.0 several MBytes/s are possible, depending on the motherboard/PC.
• Windows 98SE/ME does not recognise hard disks that are formatted with the file system
NTFS. These operating systems only recognise hard disk drives with the „FAT32" file system.
b) eSATA operation
• As described in the section „Start-up", depending on the SATA controller used, or on the moth-
erboard, the docking station or SATA hard disk might not be recognised if it is plugged in while
the operating system is running.
You will have to shutdown the operating system completely and restart the computer before
the docking station with the inserted SATA hard disk is recognised.
If the hard disk is already partitioned/formatted, the hard disk will now appear in the Windows
file manager. If the hard disk, however, is empty/not partitioned, please refer to the following
section „Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Drive".
c) General
• Always treat hard disks with care. Impacts during operation (also for a few seconds after
switching off) may cause the write/read head to touch the magnetic disk, which destroys the
hard disk!
Therefore, wait at least 30 seconds after turning off the docking station before extracting the
hard disk.
• Do not move the docking station/hard disk drive when it is switched on.
• The docking station must be placed on a stable surface free from vibrations.
Handling
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cables are neither kinked nor
pinched.
• Only use in dry indoor locations. The product must not get damp or wet! Danger
of a lethal electric shock!
• Avoid the following unfavourable environmental conditions at the installation loca-
tion and during transportation:
- Damp or excess air humidity
- Extreme cold (<0°C) or heat (>45°C), direct sunlight,
- Dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows,
- Strong magnetic fields such as those found close to machinery or loud-
speakers
• Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room to a
warm one. The condensation that forms might destroy your unit. In addition, there
is a risk of a fatal electric shock.
Allow the product to reach room temperature, before connecting it to the power
supply and putting it in to use. This may take several hours.
• Ensure that the insulation for the entire product is neither damaged nor destroyed.
• Check the product for damage before each use!
If you detect any damage, DO NOT connect the product to the mains supply! This
presents a danger to life!
• It can be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible if
- the device is visibly damaged,
- the device does not operate any longer and
- the unit was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of time or
- it has been subjected to considerable stress in transit.
• Any service or repair work must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
Disposal
Please dispose of the device when it is no longer of use, according to the current
statutory requirements.
