Driver Installation
Do not connect the USB hub to the computer yet. Install the driver on the CD pro-
vided first!
°
Place the provided CD into an appropriate drive on your computer. If the installation program
does not start automatically, open the CD directory using the Windows file manager. At the time
of writing this operating manual, the installation program „setup.exe", which is required for
Windows, was located in the directory „Driver / Windows".
Follow the program's instructions.
The driver is only required for the network adapter. The drivers for the USB hub are
part of the operating system.
Connection
If not yet done, first install the driver on the enclosed CD, see above. Otherwise
the network adapter will not work.
• Connect the USB hub to a free USB2.0/1.1 port on your computer (the latter does not need to
be switched off).
• Windows recognises the new hardware and completes the driver installation.
• Afterwards, both the 3 USB ports and the network connection provided by the integrated net-
work adapter are available.
• Connect a 1:1-connected network cable to your switch or router.
The Link-LED on the USB hub indicates an available network connection (LED lights up). If the
Link-LED is off, the network connection is not working; in which case, check that the
switch/router is turned on and/or that a 1:1-connected network cable is used.
The Act-LED flashes when data is being transferred.
Use of an External Power Unit
When used without a power supply each USB hub works in the so called „Bus-Powered-Mode".
This means that the current supplied by the computer via USB (up to 500mA) is distributed to
the 3 USB ports (and the internal USB hub or the network adapter).
This is sufficient e.g. for most mice, USB sticks or keyboards (or for USB devices
with own power supply, of course); however, many other devices will no longer
function correctly (for example, an external 6.3cm/2.5" hard disk, some USB cam-
eras or similar USB devices with high power input).
When the USB hub is powered via a mains unit (this operating mode is described as „Self-
Powered-Mode"), each USB port on the hub provides a higher current (500 mA max.).
If you find that one of the devices connected to the USB hub is not working correctly
or that it is not recognised but it functions, nevertheless, without problems when
connected to a USB connection on the PC (for example, an external 6.3cm/2.5"
hard disk), then the power supply is insufficient.
Therefore, the USB hub has a low voltage socket (3.5/1.3 mm, the internal contact
is plus/+), to which an external power supply (not included in delivery) may be con-
nected.
The power supply must have a stabilized output voltage of +5Vdc, and it should
supply a current of approx. 2A.
After connecting such a power supply unit a higher current is available at the USB
ports on the USB hub.
Tips & Notes
a) USB connection
• The USB2.0 hub is USB1.1 compatible. This means that normal USB1.1 devices can be used
with no problems on the USB2.0 Hub. However, this will not speed up the USB1.1 devices.
The theoretical maximum speed of 480 MBit/s for USB2.0 is not achieved in practice. The rea-
sons are protocol information, simultaneous operation of several USB devices or the speed
limit of the connected device or the USB controller/motherboard.
• Correct USB2.0 operation does not require a special „USB2.0 cable". Conventional USB
cables are sufficient, but they do need to be shielded.
If transmission problems occur during the use of USB2.0 devices, you can try to use a USB
cable which has been tested for USB2.0 use („USB2.0-certified").
• Normally, USB operation is not possible in DOS or in the protected mode of Windows.
Nevertheless, depending on the computer or BIOS /Setup settings, it possible to use a USB
keyboard and a USB mouse. It is necessary, however, to connect them directly to the com-
puter's USB interface, i.e. not to the USB Hub.
• USB devices can be plugged in and unplugged while the PC is in use. This means that you do
not have to switch off your computer, when you want to plug in or unplug devices (with other
interfaces this can cause damage, e.g. if you connect or disconnect a PS/2 mouse during oper-
ation).
If data transfers are in progress on the USB port, e.g. if an external disk is inputting data to the
computer, and you unplug the USB plug, Windows might crash and other data may also be
damaged!
For some USB2.0 devices (e.g. USB hard disk) Windows displays an icon with an arrow in the
menu bar. You can „separate" the USB device from the computer using this function, and thus
instruct the computer to close opened files. Afterwards, the USB device can be unplugged
safely.
