Installation

If you do not have the expertise to perform the installation, please arrange for
the installation to be carried out by an expert or a suitable specialist shop!
Switch off the computer in which the mounting frame is to be installed as well
as all connected devices and separate all devices from the mains voltage; pull
the mains plug! Just turning off at the on/off switch is not enough!
• Open your computer's housing and carefully remove the cover.
• Locate a free PCIe slot, remove the respective slot cover and insert the PCIe card into the
slot. Screw on the plug-in card firmly (unless the computer case you use provides an option
of a screwless installation).
To install the plug-in card in a flat computer casing, a low-profile slot bracket is
provided. Remove the long slot bracket (3) from the plug-in card and then mount the
low-profile slot bracket.
• Connect the bus bar (4) of the plug-in card with a suitable SATA connector of the PC power
supply.
If your PC power module has no suitable free power connector, then you need a suitable
adapter (not included in the plug-in card scope of supply).

Important:
The SATA power connector (4) on the plug-in card must be connected to an appro-
priate connector of your PC power module. Otherwise, the connected USB device
will have problems functioning (the external USB device does not receive sufficient
power supply).
• Close the computer housing.
• Connect the computer and monitor to the mains voltage again and switch on all devices.
• If your computer does not start correctly, switch it off immediately and check all the settings
and cable connections.
Before opening the PC again, disconnect the PC from the mains voltage, see above!
Driver installation
Windows detects the plug-in card automatically. Cancel the automatic search for drivers or the
hardware recognition.
Insert the supplied data carrier into the respective drive of your computer. Start the Windows
file manager.
Installing USB3.0 driver
• Open the "USB3.0 Host" directory and then the "NEC" folder contained therein.
• Double click on "xxxxxx-setup.exe" (here, "xxxxxx" is the version number of the driver, e.g.,
"RENESAS-USB3-Host-driver-30230" or some other one).
• Follow the instructions of installation wizard or Windows.
Installing network connection driver
• Open the "1000_GigaNet" directory and then the "RTL8153" folder contained therein.
• Then choose the subdirectory matching your operating system, e.g., "Win_7" for Windows 7.
• Double click "setup.exe".
• Follow the instructions of installation wizard or Windows.
After the driver has been installed, it is necessary to restart before the plug-in card can work
correctly.
Tips and notes
USB2.0/1.1 devices
• It is possible, of course, to operate all "old" USB2.0/1.1 devices with a USB3.0 port. Simply
connect the USB device to one of the USB3.0 ports of the plug-in card.
Use conventional USB2.0/1.1 connection cables to connect the devices.
• Normally, USB2.0/1.1 devices do not become any faster when operated on a USB3.0 port.
However, if the USB2.0 controller on the motherboard works relatively slowly it is possible,
for example, that USB2.0 hard disks can transfer data faster via a USB3.0 port on the plug-in
card.
USB3.0 devices
• In order to connect a USB3.0 device to the plug-in card, a USB3.0 cable is necessary. At first
glance, the USB3.0-A plug looks similar to a conventional USB2.0/1.1 plug, however, it has
additional internal connector pins.
The USB-B plug on a USB3.0 cable, however, has a different shape.
• A USB3.0 hard disk enclosure can also be operated on a USB3.0/2.0/1.1 port via a conven-
tional USB2.0/1.1 cable. However, a faster data transfer is not possible..
• In order to use the fast data transfer of USB3.0, not only a USB3.0 controller is necessary,
but also a USB3.0 device and an appropriate USB3.0 cable.
• USB3.0 provides a theoretical data transfer of 5GBit (approx. 600MB/s). The transfer speed
in practice depends, however, on the devices involved in the data transfer (e.g., internal and
external hard disk), the type of data (many small files or few large files) and many other fac-
tors.
• Output current provided by each USB3.0 port of the plug-in card is 900 mA. However, for
this purpose, the SATA power connector of your PC power module should be connected with
corresponding power connector (4) of the plug-in card!
