low height as this can damage it.
Driver Installation
The drivers of the external hard drive are available in the operating system (e.g., in Windows
XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7) or at the USB3.0 controller respectively. No driver is therefore
provided for the external hard drive.
Connection
There are two different types of USB ports:
• USB3.0-Port
According to the USB3.0 standards a current of max. 900mA can be supplied. This should
be sufficient to operate the hard disk enclosure including the built-in hard drive.
Possibly, the maximum available current is lower on notebooks or with non-
standard USB3.0 ports. In such case use an external power supply (not provided)
like for USB2.0/1.1, see information under „USB2.0/1.1 ports".
• USB2.0- or USB1.1-Port
There are two possibilities:
1. Low power USB port: It can deliver a current of max. 100mA, e.g. the USB port of a
keyboard or the USB port of a USB2.0/1.1 hub without power supply unit.
2. High power USB port: Such a USB port can supply a maximum power of 500mA, e.g. a
USB port of the computer/notebook or the USB port of a USB hub with its own power unit.

Version 05/10
• Switch on your computer, if not done so yet, and wait until the operating system has finished
loading.
• Connect the mini-USB3.0 port on the rear of the external drive to a free USB3.0-connection
of your computer using the provided USB cable.
• Windows automatically recognises the external hard drive on first commission and completes
the driver installation.
Partitioning / formatting the hard drive
If the external hard drive does not appear as a new drive in your operating system (e.g. in the
Windows File Manager), check first whether the external hard drive was recognised by the
operating system.
In Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, partitioning and formatting are very easy to
perform from the Control Panel. This is where you select the correct hard disk and create a new
partition.
Finally, the newly created partition is to be formatted (quick formatting is sufficient as otherwise
the formatting operation takes too long).
Handling
Please note:
The external hard drive requires a current of approx. 1A during start and approx.
400-500mA during operation.
When connecting the hard disk enclosure with the built-in hard drive to a USB2.0/
1.1 port problem can occur, since only a few USB2.0/1.1 ports can provide the
necessary start-up current for the hard drive.
The result is: The hard drive does not start-up properly, it is not recognised by the
operating system, the drive only makes clicking noises. The drive motor of the hard
drive does not start!
Therefore when connecting the hard disk housing with the built-in hard drive to a
USB2.0/1.1 port you should utilise an external power supply (not provided) in any
event. The power supply unit must deliver a stabilised output voltage of 5V= and a
current of min. 1A. The central contact of the round plug must be Plus/+, the outer
contact Minus/-.
In case of doubt, consult a specialist.
Only when using an USB3.0 port the fast transfer mode is used; the maximum data
transfer speed of USB2.0 or USB1.1 ports is respectively lower.
The hard drive is already partitioned and formatted before delivery (e.g., NTFS file
system, one large partition having the maximum capacity of the hard drive).
The external hard drive is displayed by Windows in File Manager as a new drive.
A re-partitioning or formatting is not required in this case.
All existing data on the hard drive are lost during partitioning and formatting.
Therefore, make sure that you select the correct hard drive!
• The following unfavourable conditions are to be avoided when installing or
transporting the product:
- Moisture or too high air humidity
- Extreme cold or heat, direct sunlight
- Dust or combustible gases, vapours or solvents
- Strong vibrations, hits, impacts
- Strong magnetic fields such as those found close to machinery or loudspeakers
• Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room into
a warm one. The condensation that forms might destroy the product.
Leave the product switched off and wait until it has reached room temperature
before using it. This may take several hours.
• When installing the device, make sure the cables are not bent or jammed.
• To avoid pressure points or discolourations, do not place the external hard drive
on valuable furniture surfaces without adequate support.
• Do not move the external hard drive when it is in use; wait for at least 30 seconds
even after switching it off, so that the magnetic disks inside the hard drive come
to a standstill.
• Servicing or repair may only be carried out by a specialist/specialist workshop.
Never take apart the device, there are no serviceable parts inside.
