QUICK START GUIDE
ln Exclusive Mode (the green Sidekick LED is off), the TRIAGE footswitches 1, 2 or 3 individually select
between the corresponding amplifiers. Each footswitch operation deselects the current channel activating
the newly selected amp. The Sidekick switch changes to Parallel Mode, and the green LED indicator illumi-
nates. Footswitches 1, 2 and 3 now select any combination of output channels simultaneously which can be
turned off individually by operating the corresponding switches again. For silent tuning theTRIAGE outputs
can be muted. The Sidekick switch returns the unit to Exclusive Mode indicated by the now flashing LED,
and switches 1, 2 or 3 again select between the assigned amps. Detailed informationen on your TRIAGE is
provided below.

THE CONCEPT
The PALMER TRIAGE is a switcher and signal splitter to feed up to three amplifiers and select them each indi-
vidually in Exclusive Mode operation. A second mode provides the selection and deselection of any combination
of the connected amplifiers in parallel. For instrument tuning the amplifier outputs can be muted. Additional use
full features are individual output Ievel controls with a maximum gain of 12 db (input Ievel x 4) and 180° degree
phase reversal switches. Used with multiple amps, the latter provide interesting sound possibilities due to
intentional phase cancellation. However, they can also correct an amplifier's phase that is reverse to that of an-
other resulting in thinned out reproduction when both amps are played simultaneously. The TRIAGE outputs are
electrically isolated via individual high quality mumetal transformers effectively eliminating ground loops when
connecting multiple amplifiers. ln addition, the careful TRIAGE design incorporatesindividualoutput groundliftl-
connectswitchesto provide groundingifnecessary. The discrete Class Ainput amplifier design features low noise
transistors while a stepup transformer increases the 9 V input to approximately 35V providing a dynamic range
far above that of common floor pedals. After extensive research and testing we decided on optocoupled switch-
ing.Similar to relay-based true bypass switching, optocouplers do not colort he signal path while providing the
advantage of soft, pop-free switching. The superiorTRIAGE performance is achieved by increased power with an
external 9 V/120 mA supply being the most economical solution.
SETUP
As an alternative to Velcro fastening the TRIAGE features two fixing holes at the rear of the bottom plate for
screw-mounting to a pedalboard. Although the 1.5 mm steel housing provides adequate shielding the unit
should not be mounted near large transformers that may leak. All sockets and operating elements apart from
the footswitches are located at the rear of the TRIAGE. To avoid potentially harmful pops and other noise the
unit, instrument, and amplifiers should be connected before the system is powered up. Use high quality shielded
instrument cable only for instrument input and amplifier connection to the TRIAGE outputs. After verifying correct
polarity, connect a regulated 9V/120mA power supply to the 9VDC barrel type input (center pin = negative,
barrellshaft = positive). Since most pedalboards feature a power supply the TRIAGE comes without a wall wart.
After powering up the unit is ready Exclusive Mode and channel1 are active indicated by the illuminated >1<.
OPERATION
The TRIAGE's three output channels each feature a gain control, a phase reverse switch and a ground lift/
connect switch. The gain control sets the output level with unity gain at the 12 o'clock position. Maximum output
boost is 12dB (input Ievel x4) to saturate low gain amplifiers and/or compensate for Iow output pickups. The
Exclusive Mode activates one amplifier at a time, i.e. 1, 2 or 3. Footswitch operation deselects the current amp
activating the newly selected one.To select multiple amplifiers simultaneously press the SIDEKICK switch to
enter Parallel Mode which is indicaled by the green LED lighting up. The footswitches 1, 2 and 3 now activate
their corresponding outputs. To deselect an amplifier press the appropriate footswitch again, i.e. in parallel mode
footswitches 1, 2 and 3 are individual on/off switches for the corresponding amplifiers where as in exclusive
mode they switch between them. Certain amplifiers mainly tube models reverse the phase between input and
output. lf one of these is used simultaneously wilh a non-reversing type phase cancellation produces a weak,
thinned out sound especially when their loudspeakers are close to each other. lf this effect is present in your
setup reverse the phase of one channel to fallen up the overall signal. The phase switches are effective only
when multiple amps are active simultaneously, they have no audible effect on a single amp. Note: when oper-
ating three amplifiers at the same time intentional phase reversal of the center amp may be used to widen the
stereo image. To discover interesting and unusual sound varialies we strongly suggest to experiment. ln Parallel
Mode the outputs can be muted, e.g. for silently tuning your guitar. Stepping on the Sidekick switch re enters the
Exclusive Mode indicated by the flashing green LED. Use footswitches 1, 2 or 3 for amp selection tuming lhe
LED off while the active channel indicator lights up.
TO ILLUSTRATE THE PARALLELAND EXKLUSIVE MODES
Lets assume amplifiers 1 and 3 have been selected for simultaneous operation, the active channel indicators 1
and 3, and the green Parallel Mode LED are lit. To solo amplifier 2, you now press the Sidekick switch tuming off
the green LED. You will not hear any difference until you step on footswitch 2 which mutes amps 1 and 3 while,
at the same time, activating amp 2 on its own. Instrument amplifiers are generally grounded via the power cord
ground wire and a grounding type plug. Ground loop hum caused by the connection of multiple mains powered
units is effectively eliminated by the TRIAGE design which incorporates transformers to electrically isolate the
unit's outputs. For that reason the ground switches should be in LIFT position (arrow direction, standard TRIAGE
setting). lf one of the connected amplifiers produces a brighcl rackling hum (due to Iack of grounding, inter-
ference) slide the ground switch oflhe corresponding outpual gainst the arrow direction.
