Signal Converter for Dante
Audio Networks
These instructions are intended for installers
with knowledge in network technology. Please
read the instructions carefully prior to operation
and keep them for later reference.
1 Applications
This signal converter is mainly designed to receive
two channels from a Dante audio network and to
output them as analog audio signals. The signals are
available at the XLR outputs and at a 3.5 mm stereo
jack. An additional 3.5 mm stereo jack can be used
to feed two analog input signals to the Dante audio
network. A test signal (white noise) can be separately
sent to the outputs to test the audio system connect-
ed to the DTRA-2.
The signal converter can be supplied with power
via the network (via PoE) or by means of an additional
power supply unit.
1.1 Dante
Dante, an audio network developed by the compa-
ny Audinate, allows transmission of up to 512 audio
channels at the same time. Dante (Digital Audio Net-
work Through Ethernet) uses a common Ethernet
standard and is based on the Internet protocol. The
transmission of audio signals is uncompressed and
synchronized, with minimum latency. The advantage
over analog audio signal transmission is a cost-effec-
tive connection of components via standard network
cables and low susceptibility to interference, even in
case of long transmission paths. In addition, signal
routing between components that have once been
connected can be changed by software at any time.
In the Dante network, units configured as transmit-
ters are used as signal sources. Units configured as
receivers receive the signals from the Dante network.
Some units, such as the DTRA-2, provide transmitting
channels and reception channels.
The transmitting channels and reception chan-
nels are assigned in the Dante network via the
Dante configuration program "Dante Controller"
(
 chapter 6).
The Ethernet interface is also configured via the
program "Dante Controller" (
correct configuration, knowledge in network tech-
nology is indispensable.

2 Important Notes

The unit corresponds to all relevant directives of the
EU is therefore marked with
The unit is suitable for indoor use only. Protect it
against dripping water, splash water and high air
humidity. The admissible ambient temperature
range is 0 – 40 °C.
For cleaning only use a dry, soft cloth; never use
water or chemicals.
No guarantee claims for the unit and no liability for
any resulting personal damage or material damage
will be accepted if the unit is used for other pur-
poses than originally intended, if it is not correctly
connected or operated, or if it is not repaired in an
expert way.

3 Installation and Connection

If required, install the converter at a suitable place,
using its mounting brackets (3).
1) Connect the XLR jacks LINE OUT (7) to the inputs
of the audio system (e. g. line level inputs of a
mixer or amplifier). The jacks provide balanced
signals.
2) In addition, the signals are available as unbalanced
signals at the 3.5 mm stereo jack AUX OUT (10).

3) To feed signals to the Dante network, connect the
input AUX IN (9) to the line level outputs of an
audio source.

4) For connection to a Dante network, connect the
RJ45 jack (1) to an Ethernet switch which will sup-
  chapter 6.2). For
port at least Fast Ethernet (100 Mbits /s Ethernet).
This connection will also supply the converter with
power via the network (e. g. via a network switch
with PoE power supply).

5) When power is not supplied via the network,
connect a regulated 12 V DC power supply unit
with a permanent rating of 500 mA (e. g. PSS-
1205DC) to the jack DC (2), using a DC power
connector with a dimension of 5.5 / 2.1 mm
(outside/inside diameter). Observe the polarity:
inside contact = +

4 Operation

The DTRA-2 will switch on as soon as it is supplied
with power (via power supply unit or PoE). The LEDs
(4) will indicate the status:

1) Use the controls
to the input sensitivity of the subsequent units.
The level indicators (6) indicate the output levels
of the two reception channels.
2) For testing, the switches S1/ S2 (5) can be used to
feed a test signal (white noise) generated in the
DTRA-2 instead of the signal received from the
Dante network to the corresponding output.
3) Use the program "Dante Controller" to include
the converter into a Dante network (
