Clean the coffee maker before first use by brewing two full carafes of tap water. Do not put any coffee in
the filter for this initial cleaning.
1. Open the top lid (1).
2. Fill the water tank (13) to the maximum level, as described in Step 1: Espresso/Cappuccino Maker,
no.1, and insert the filter basket (16) into the appliance. It must engage audibly.
3. Fold down the spout (Fig.5) and close the lid (1). It must engage, too.
4. Place the carafe (12) onto the hotplate (11).
5. Switch on the coffee maker by pressing AUTO/CAFÉ (A) twice.
6. When all the water has dripped into the carafe, turn the coffee maker off by pressing AUTO/CAFÉ (A),
let it cool for approx. 10 minutes and repeat the above procedure with fresh water.
Cleaning before first use is now complete. Your appliance is now ready for brewing coffee, espresso, cap-
puccino to your taste.

Brewing Espresso

Espresso is much stronger and more aromatic than normal coffee and is drunk out of small cups. It is pre-
pared by forcing hot water under pressure through ground coffee or coffee pods. This produces the delight-
ful black coffee with the stimulating effect. Apart from its characteristic flavour, the hallmark of espresso is
the typical formation of a splendid froth, called crema. This requires a high pressure and the use of gen-
uine, properly roasted espresso coffee beans which have been correctly ground.
If you do not use ready-ground espresso coffee, grind the coffee beans in a coffee mill at a medium to fine
setting.
1. Fill the water tank (13) with fresh cold water. (see Before First Use, Step 1: Espresso/Cappuccino
Maker, no.1)
2. Fully turn the steam release knob (3) to
28
.
