within the digital output data. However,
this information is rarely evaluated by
subsequent digital equipment and so
far its (mis-)setting is of limited impor-
tance.
D-TO-A SECTION
THE DIGITAL INPUTS
The two digital inputs are located on the unit's
rear panel. The can alternately be activated by
a switch on the front panel.
The AES input is equipped with an XLR con-
nector which is electronically balanced at 110
Ohms impedance, according to AES 3-1992
specifications.
The optical S/P-DIF input is equipped with a
TOS-LINK TORX 176 connector, according to
EIAJ-RC-5720.
THE ANALOG OUTPUTS
The ADDAC F29's analog outputs are located
on the rear panel, equipped with unbalanced
cinch and electronically balanced XLR ter-
minals. XLR pinout follows AES 14-1992 re-
commendations:
1 = Ground, 2 = (+) Phase, 3 = (-) Phase
Output impedance is 50 Ohms approx.
NOTE: If the balanced outputs are terminated
by unbalanced loads, the unused signal
pin must not be connected to ground.
Instead, it must be left open!
The ADDAC F29's output level is adjustable by
trimmers on the front panel within a range of 0
... +20 dBu for digital full scale.
NOTE: Balanced and unbalanced outputs may
be used simultaneously. A low-Z load or
short circuit at the unbalanced output,
however, may cause malfunction of the
balanced outputs.

CONTROLS AND DISPLAYS

THE INPUT SWITCH
One of either digital inputs can be activated by
this switch. Which input is active, is indicated by
the corresponding yellow "OPTO"- or "AES"-
LED.
STATUS LEDS
Digital signal status at the active input is fed
back by four LEDs.
The yellow "PRO"- or "CON"-LED illuminates
according to the consumer/professional bit set
within the digital input data.
The yellow "EMPHASIS"-LED illuminates, if the
emphasis indicator bit is set - meaning that the
signal has been encoded in corresponding
manner. At the same time, the D-to-A conver-
ter's digital de-emphasis function is activated.
NOTE: Due to circuitry layout, the ADDAC F29
decodes 'emphasized' signals perfectly
only at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. At
48 kHz sampling frequency, a linearity
error of about 0.3 dB @ 15 kHz will re-
sult.
The red "ERROR"-LED will illuminate, if the di-
gital input signal cannot be converted properly -
or if there is no signal at all. If the 'ERROR'
function is engaged, the analog outputs will be
muted.
NOTE: In most cases, the reason for an error
based mute is excessive jitter of the di-
gital signal. Second most, a sampling
rate beyond the specified range from
28 ... 54 kHz will cause the error detec-
tion circuit to activate.
OUTPUT LEVEL TRIMMERS
By means of the "GAIN"-trimmers on the front
panel, analog output level amplitude can be ad-
justed within a range of 0 ... +20 dB approx.
