2.1 Aligning the optical finder scope
The finder scope with crosshairs is an aid for locating celestial objects. The low magnification gives a wide
field of view, allowing you to keep track of a large area of sky but still accurately place objects in the main
telescope's field of view. In order to be able to find objects with it, the finder scope must first be accurately
aligned parallel to the main telescope. This is best done during the day.
1.
In daylight, take the telescope out into the open and select a point on the horizon about 1-2 km away.
The peak of a distant church spire or top of a tree is suitable.
2.
Find the top or peak using the main telescope and place it precisely in the centre of the field of view.
3.
The object will probably already be visible in the finder scope, take a look through it. Using the three
side adjustment screws, adjust the finder scope until the object is precisely located in the centre of the
crosshairs.
4.
Make sure that the object is now precisely centred in both optics.
You can make any fine adjustments necessary under the night sky
