REMOVING/EMPTYING THE DUST
COLLECTION BOX OR CONNECTING
EXTERNAL DUST EXTRACTION
y The sander can be used either with the dust collection
box installed or it is possible to remove the dust collec-
tion box as shown in fig. 5a and, using an appropriate
hose adapter, connect the hose of an industrial vacuum
cleaner with a sufficient filtration efficiency. In the
event that external dust extraction is used, do not use
a vacuum cleaner intended for household use. To empty
out the dust collection box, remove the top cover as
shown in fig. 5b.

WARNING
y Dust is generated during the sanding pro-
cess that is damaging to health, especially
dust from chemically-treated materials,
therefore, use dust extraction using an
industrial vacuum cleaner with a sufficient level of
filtration or the dust collection box when working with
the sander, and also use certified protection of the
respiratory tract with a sufficient level of protection
(we recommend filtration class FFP3). Ensure quality
ventilation of the area during work. Dust from hard
wood (e.g. beech, oak) is considered to be a carcinogen.
44
VI. Turning on/off,
method of work
y During work, use eye protection against flying
debris, hearing protection (acoustic power level
exceeds 85 dB(A) and long term exposure to a higher
noise level in the direct vicinity of the power tool may
irreparably damage hearing), furthermore, bre-
athing tract protection with filtration class FFP3
(recommended), gloves for protection against
mechanical risks and vibrations, suitable pro-
tective clothing and work footwear.
Inform yourself at stores selling protective work equipment.
y If it is not stable thanks to its own weight,
always secure the material being sanded (the
workpiece) so that it is stable, e.g. by fastening it
using clamps to a rigid surface.
An unstable workpiece may lead to loss of control over
the power tool and to the injury of the user.
1) Before connecting the sander to an el. power
source, check that the voltage in the power
socket is in the range 220-240 V~50/50 Hz. The
sander may be used in this specified voltage
range and at this frequency.
2) Insert the power cord plug into a power socket
with the above-specified voltage range.
3) Turn on the sander by moving the on/off switch
(fig. 1, position 3) to the front position (the
number I will be visible on the switch).
•
WARNING
y In the event that there is an unusual noise, vibra-
tions or operation while the power tool is running,
immediately turn off the power tool, disconnect it
from the el. power supply and identify and rectify
the cause of this unusual operation. If the unusual
operation is caused by a fault inside the power tool,
have it repaired at an authorised service centre for
the Extol® brand (service locations are listed at the
website address at the start of this manual).
4) Hold the sander by the front and rear handle and
applying slight balanced downward pressure
between both handles move over the material
being sanded in circular motions. The sander works
on the principle of micro vibrations of its base plate and
45
high frequency vibrations. Do not exert excessive pre-
ssure on the sander to prevent the motor of the sander
from burning. Excessive downward pressure does not
lead to higher sanding efficiency, it only speeds up the
wear on the sandpaper sheet and the sander.
VIBRATION SPEED CONTROL
y Using the vibration speed control dial (fig. 1, position
1), it is possible to set the appropriate vibration speed
of the base plate with respect to the character/surface
treatment of the material being sanded and the grit
size of the sandpaper. The vibration frequency can also
be changed while the sander is running. Determine the
optimal vibration frequency on a sample of the material.
y For sanding away old surface coats and subsequent
application of a new one, it is necessary to perform seve-
ral sanding passes with sandpapers having increasingly
finer grit sizes so that all the sanding marks are finally
sanded away, even those of the larger grit sandpapers,
which is important, for example, for wood varnishing.
y After emptying out the collection box, close the tilt-
-open cover so that it clicks into the collection box.
TURNING OFF
T o turn off the power tool, set the on/off switch to
the opposite position.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
FOR WORK WITH THE SANDER
y Do not use the power tool for a purpose other
than that for which it was designed. Do not
modify the tool for different applications.
y Do not use the power tool to work on materi-
als other than those specified in the chapter
„Characteristics - purpose of use".
y Always hold the sander by the main and auxiliary
handle because this is the safest holding method
for minimising the risk associated with loss of
control over the power tool.
y The power tool must be held by the insulated
grip surfaces because the abrasive surface could
come into contact with its own power cord.
Cutting through a „live" power cord may cause uninsula-
ted metal parts of the power tool to become live and may
result in the user suffering injury by electrical shock.
