Setting the Proper Recording Level
The recording level has a very important effect on the sound
quality of a recording when it is played back.
A recording
level that is too high will cause distortion while a low
recording level will lower the signal-to-noise ratio resulting
in a tape in which the background "'hiss noise"' is prominent.
Setting the proper recording level is particularly important
with cassette tapes since they have a much thinner magnetic
coating than open reel tapes.
The thin coating gives the
tape a rather low saturation level which can easily be
surpassed if the recording level is set too high. Adjust the
input recording level control knob [30} while watching the
peak level meter [20] to be sure the setting is not too high
or low.
©
With metal tape formulations, the input recording level
control knob [30] should be adjusted so that the +4 and
+6 dB indicators light up from time to time. With all
other kinds of tapes, the +2 and +4 dB indicators should
only light up from time to time.
If indicators above
the 0 dB mark light up frequently, the recording level is
too high.
@
When recording from an FM tuner with a recording
calibration function, the input recording level control
should be set so that the 50% modulated test signal
produces a 0 dB reading.
In general, the left and right level settings should be the
same.
If the strength of the individual channels differs
considerably, adjust the left and right level settings
independently to obtain the desired balance.
Since signal
strength changes when a different signal source is used,
the peak level meter (20) should be checked from time to
time to be sure the input recording level is still correct.
Special Modes of Operation
Auto-reverse operation
The TA-R77 includes an auto-reverse function that
automatically reverses the direction of tape travel in
the playback or record modes when the end of the
magnetic tape is reached.
Tape travel is reversed as
soon as a photo sensor detects the presence of the
clear leader.
In other words, as soon as the sensing
light ray passes through the tape, the direction of
tape travel is reversed.
The reversal time interval is
extremely short so that the silent gap during playback
is barely noticeable.
If the cassette tape does not have
