1. Inserting and Changing the Batteries
Remove the battery compartment cover by pushing
in the direction of the arrow. Insert the batteries
as indicated on the bottom of the compartment
and refit
cover.
Please ensure the polarity is as
indicated.
The battery life, at 2 hours use per day
and medium volume levels should be approx.
20 hours (according to DIN 45
525).
Approx. double life can be obtained using Alkali
batteries (eg
:
Mallory/
Daimon MN 1400 or Varta
7233).
To check the battery voltage observe the
battery meter
@
with the recorder switched to
"
start"
.
The batteries are exhausted when the
pointer of the meter moves in the orange coloured
section.
Use only reputable leak-proof batteries
(Ever Ready HP 11, Varta 281, Daimon 259 or
equivalent). Remove exhausted batteries immedi
-
ately or even new batteries if the recorder is not to
be used for any length of
time.
The guarantee
does not cover damage caused by leaking bat-
teries
.
2. Mains Operation
The CR 485a must be connected to a mains supply
of 220-230 V AC (± 10°/o).
When connecting the mains cable plug to the
mains socket
@
the internal batteries are auto-
matically switched off.
Inserting the Cassette
Press the cassette compartment button
@,
the
cassette compartment lid will spring
open.
Insert
cassette (rear first) with the full spool on the left.
Cassettes may be used in each direction. Having
filled one of the double tracks of the tape in the
cassette, the cassette may be turned over and the
same recording time is
available.
For track identi-
fications the cassette labels are marked with the
letters
A
and
B.
Recordings will be made on the
tape tracks nearest the compartment lid.
The same applies on replay and with pre-recorded
cassettes, the titles must point upwards. After in-
serting the cassette - as far as possible - close
the lid
.
Tape Type Switch
The tape type switch
©
must be set to the correct
position on record
.
Pos.
CR for Chromium dioxide casseittes
(eg: GRUNDIG HiFi Chrome dioxide cassette)
Pos. FeCr for Ferrochrome cassettes
(eg: GRUNDIG Ferrochrome professional cassette)
Pos.
Fe for Iron oxide cassettes
(eg: GRUNDIG Studio cassette LHS)
During playback the position of tape switch
©
has
no effect.
Tape Position Indicator
®
After the cassette has been inserted, the counter
®
must be set to (000) by pressing the reset but-
ton. When making a record ing the tape position
indicator numbers can be noted and used to build
up an index of recorded information - and also to
check if there is space for more than one record-
ing on the tape. On playback, after inserting the
cassette, the counter must again be set to (000)
by pressing the reset
button.
Then any chosen title
may be selected by winding on and observing the
counter reading.
This of course is only applicable if the casseitte
has been fully rewound before it is inserted.
Preparations for Recording (see pie. 2)
If you do not wish to record via the built-in con-
denser microphone, you may connect the following
to the universal input/output socket
Q):
e
A GRUNDIG microphone GDM 308 (mono) with
remote control for start/stop on record
.
A condenser microphone eg
:
GCMS 332 (stereo) or GCM 319 (mono). Two
mono microphones can be used for stereo re-
cording with adaptor cable 278a.
A dynamic microphone eg:
GRUNDIG GDM 314 (mono)
.
A
record player fitted with a crystal or ceramic
cartridge if you wish to record records
.
For ra-
diograms or audio systems connection should
be made with a GRUNDIG cable 242 which can
be used for both record and
replay.
It
is not
necessary to change the cable.
Tapes can be copied by connecting another
cassette or tape recorder via cable
242.
For
some units it may be necessary to use adaptor
296.
Cassette
recordings
can
be
played
back
through a
mono/
stereo radio or you may re-
cord
in
mono/
stereo using the connecting
cable 242.
Recording
Please observe copyright laws.
To record press the pause key
@,
the record key
@
and holding down key
@
press the start key
@-
The machine will automatically set the correct
record level. In the case of radio recordings make
the adjustment during the transmission of music
or speech
.
For microphone recordings try to find
the loudest part of the dialogue or
music.
If you want to record via an external microphone,
the volume control
@
must be set to zero or an
earphone connected to the loudspeaker output
socket
®
for monitoring the recording
,
otherwise
acoustic feedback could occur, causing a howling
sound. When recording with the built-in micro-
phone
@,
the loudspeaker output stage is switch-
ed off automatically to avoid acoustic feedback
.
In the case of a gramophone recording or a tape
copy, try to find the loudest passage. After this
return the pick-up arm to the beginning of the rec-
ord or rewind the tape you want to copy to the
start. Now release the pause key
@
and the tape
will start to run
.
The built-in automatic level con-
trol will guarantee the best possible recording.
