1 Port USB3.0 ExpressCard
Item no. 98 61 66
Intended use
The product is designed for installation in a laptop's ExpressCard port, to provide a USB3.0
interface.
For USB devices with higher power consumption, you can connect an external power adapter
(not included in the delivery, to be ordered separately).
This product complies with the applicable National and European requirements. All names of

Package Contents
• ExpressCard
• CD with driver
• Operating Instructions
Features
• ExpressCard34 type
• One USB3.0 port (backwards compatible with USB 2.0/1.1)
• Short model, so the ExpressCard can remain in most laptops, for example when the compu-
ter is to be transported.
• A low voltage connector is available for connection of an external power supply unit (not included
in the delivery, to be ordered separately) to supply power to a USB device with higher power
requirements.
Driver installation
Install the driver before inserting the plug-in card into the laptop.
• Insert the data carrier enclosed into an appropriate drive on your laptop. If your laptop does
not have a CD/DVD drive, the driver can also be copied to a USB stick, for example, and then
to the laptop.
• Start the setup programme; at the time these instructions were written, it was located in the
directory „Renesas" and there in the directory „uPD72020x".
• Follow all of the instructions. Windows may need to be restarted after completing the
installation.
Inserting the ExpressCard into the Computer
Please note that the card is a "genuine" fast ExpressCard.
This means that the ExpressCard does not function with common USB/Express-
Card adapters (e.g. to test an ExpressCard at a USB port of a „normal" computer).
Hardware detection will not take place with such adapters!
Only use the ExpressCard in a laptop with a fully wired ExpressCard slot, and not
with such an adapter.
• Correctly insert the ExpressCard into an ExpressCard slot on the laptop. If your laptop has
several slots, it does not matter which of the slots you use.
Follow your laptop's operating manual to know how an ExpressCard should be inserted and
removed.
• Windows then recognises the new hardware and completes the driver installation.
• The USB3.0 port on the ExpressCard is now available for connecting to appropriate
hardware.
Power Supply for USB Devices
The power for USB devices connected to the ExpressCard is supplied either by the laptop (e.g.
when USB sticks, USB webcams or similar are connected to the ExpressCard) or by the power
adapter, which is enclosed with the USB device.
However, for the connection of USB devices with higher power consumption (e.g. an external
USB3.0 hard disc without power adapter or a USB DVD writer or the like) the power supply of
the laptop is not suffi cient.
In such cases, you can connect a suitable power adapter (not included in the delivery, to be
ordered separately) to the round connector of the ExpressCard.
You will need a power supply unit which provides an output voltage of 5 V/DC and a current of
at least 900 mA (USB3.0 standard).
Pay attention to the correct polarity. The inner contact of the round plug should be Plus/"+", the

outer contact Minus/"-".
Version 04/12
Connecting a USB Device to the ExpressCard
• USB2.0/1.1 device
It is possible, of course, to operate all „old" USB 2.0/1.1 devices with a USB 3.0 port. Simply
connect the USB device to the USB3.0 port on the ExpressCard.
Use a conventional USB2.0/1.1 connection cable to connect the devices.
USB2.0/1.1 devices do not become any faster when operated via a USB3.0 port. However,
if the USB2.0 controller in the laptop works relatively slowly, it is possible, for example, for a
USB2.0 hard disc to transfer data faster via a USB3.0 port on the ExpressCard.
• USB3.0 device
In order to connect a USB3.0 device to the ExpressCard, a USB3.0 cable is required.
At the fi rst glance, the USB-A plug of the USB3.0 cable looks similar to a USB2.0/1.1 plug;
however, it has additional internal connector pins.
A USB3.0 hard disc enclosure with USB3.0-B connector can also be operated on a
USB3.0/2.0/1.1 port, via a conventional USB2.0/1.1 cable. However, faster data transfer is
not possible.
In order to use the fast data transfer provided by USB3.0, not only a USB3.0 controller is
required (e.g. the ExpressCard enclosed), but also a USB3.0 end device and an appropriate
USB3.0 cable.
USB 3.0 provides a theoretical data transfer of 5 GBit (approx. 600 MByte/s). The transfer
speed in practice depends, however, on the devices involved in the data transfer (internal
and external hard disk), the type of data (many small fi les or few large fi les) and many other
factors.
Disconnecting the USB Device from the ExpressCard
and Removing the ExpressCard
• Complete any data transfer to the USB device, before disconnecting it from the ExpressCard.
In Windows, the connection to certain USB devices (e.g. USB hard discs) can be discon-
nected via an arrow symbol in the menu bar. Windows then closes all open fi les and the USB
cable or USB device can be disconnected without risk.
• Please refer to your laptop's operating manual for how to disconnect an ExpressCard from
the computer. Usually, the card has to be slid into the laptop a little bit so that a special inter-
nal mechanical system ejects the card.
Disposal
Alternatively, you can also operate a USB device with higher power input via a
USB3.0 hub with a separate power adapter.
However, fi rst complete any data transfer to the USB device, as described above.
Only after this may the USB device be disconnected from the ExpressCard or the
ExpressCard removed from the laptop.
Dispose of an unserviceable product in accordance with the relevant statutory
regulations.
