Shielded cables in intrinsically safe
circuits
If the installed cabling involves a cable shield
entering a Zone 1 or Zone 0 hazardous area, the
shield must either be treated as an equipotential
bonding conductor or must meet the require-
ments of a recognized type of explosion protec-
tion.

Foreign bodies
All foreign bodies must be removed from the
explosionproof switchgear assemblies before the
system is put into operation.

Servicing and maintenance
The provisions of IEC 60079-17 'Inspection
and maintenance of electrical installations in
hazardous areas' pertaining to servicing and
maintenance must be observed. During ser-
vicing, it is particularly important to check
those components upon which the type of
protection depends.
Before an explosionproof multipurpose dis-
tribution, switching and control unit is
opened, it must be disconnected from the
power supply and appropriate safety mea-
sures taken.
5.1
Maintenance intervals
The required maintenance intervals depend on
the application and must therefore be specified
by the user to suit the operating conditions.
Residual current devices must be tested once
per month as part of the maintenance schedule.
5.2
Servicing of intrinsically safe circuits
The enclosures may not be opened for servicing
without any special precautions. If any intrinsi-
cally safe circuits that are connected are affected
by the servicing work, make sure that no danger-
ous remote effects can occur.
