DB Diesel Loco, 251 903-1
THE PROTOTYPE
To replace aging steam locomoti-
ves on their narrow gauge branch
lines, the German Railways (DB)
ordered five modern diesel-
hydraulic locomotives. Two 270
horsepower diesel engines are
mounted under the long front
hood, while the short hood conce-
als the air compressor, air reser-
voir and fuel tanks. These loco-
motives served their communities
in southwestern Germany until
their rail lines were abandoned.
Today, one operates on the
Rügenschen Kleinbahnen on the
Baltic island of Rügen.
