Analysis procedures
1. Pour into bottles the volume of sample according to adopted scale, measured by a graduated cylinder.
2. Put into each bottle a magnetic stirring bar.
3. Fill the alkali holder, small container located under bottle cap, with an amount of carbon dioxide absorber, enough to
avoid losses through the holes. If some alkali falls into a bottle, wash throughly before pouring again a volume of sample
under examination.
4. Place the bottles into position in the stirring equipment.
5. Introduce the stirring equipment into the refrigerated thermostat set to the temperature chosen for incubation. Connect
magnetic stirrers to mains introducing the plug into the socket. Put into operation the refrigerated thermostat.
6. After 30-40 minutes the apparatus and samples are usually in thermal equilibrium at the chosen temperature.
7. The apparatus is ready to start BOD measurement. Place a BOD Sensor on each bottle and screw tight. Reset each BOD
Sensor cancelling any memorized value, choose the most appropriate scale and start the measuring cycle.
Analytical method
Biochemical Oxygen Demand is expressed as weight of oxygen consumed per unit volume of water during a defined period
of time at a defined temperature, e.g. mg O
