Die Electro-Motive Division (EMD) von General Motors in
den USA hat 1939 eine der erfolgreichsten Lokomotiven der
Eisenbahn-Geschichte vorgestellt: Die F-Type. Von den ver-
schiedenen Versionen dieser Baureihe - FT, F 2, F 3, F 7 und
F 9 - wurden bis in die 1960er-Jahre über 7.700 Einheiten
gebaut und an über 50 Bahngesellschaften in den USA,
Kanada, Mexico, Saudi-Arabien und Australien geliefert.
Besonders vielseitig waren die zwischen 1.350 und 1.750 PS
starken diesel-elektrischen Lokomotiven durch die Möglich-
keit der Mehrfach-Traktion. Zwei A-Einheiten mit Führer-
stand und weitere B-Einheiten ohne Führerstand konnten zu
der jeweils benötigten Zugleistung zusammengekuppelt und
von beiden Enden aus synchron gesteuert werden.

Information about the Prototype

In 1939 the Electro Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors
in the USA presented one of the most successful locomoti-
ves in railroad history: The F type. Of the different versions
of this class - FT, F 2, F 3, F 7 and F 9 - over 7,700 units were
built into the 1960's and delivered to over 50 railroads in the
USA, Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Australia.
The ability to operate several units in tandem made these
diesel locomotives with their 1,350 to 1,750 horsepower
specially versatile. Two A units with engineer's cabs and
additional B units without cabs could be coupled together
for the required tractive effort and could be operated simul-
taneously from either end.
