Warnings

Risk of injury due to electric shock or severe burns!
•
Active implants such as pacemakers or implanted electrodes
can be damaged or disturbed by application of electrosurgery. Moreover, implants can change the
current density, leading to unnoticed endogenous burns.
• Consult a cardiologist before the operation!
•
Metallic shunts in the HF current path
•
The smartPen electrode handle may be used only with HF electrodes by Gebrüder Martin.
• Compatible electrodes are listed in the HF accessories catalog by KLS Martin
•
Compatible electrodes can be found on the KLS Martin website
The patient should not come into contact with metallic parts that are grounded or have significant
electrical capacitances to the ground.

We recommend using antistatic cloths for this purpose. In cases of doubt, feel free to contact the
Martin Service Center for further information, see section 2.2 "Hotline", page 37.
•
Skin-to-skin contact, e.g. between the arms and the body of the patient, must be avoided, for
example by placing dry gauze in between.
•
Alternating HF current paths
In case of direct skin contact of cables, capacitive currents may cause burns.
• Lay out the supply cable to the smartPen in the operating area so that it comes into contact neither
with the patient nor with other cables.
•
Uncontrolled emission of HF current!
•
Avoid accidental activation of HF current by unintentional activation of a key, rocker switch or foot
switch!
•
Keep magnetic materials and magnetic fields (especially MRI, NMR spectroscopy) away from the foot
switch!
Peril to life or danger of serious physical injury from prion infection!
Destroy products immediately after any potential contact with prions and do not use again under any
circumstances. There is risk of contamination with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD)!
