Operating Instructions
for STÖBER ES servo motors
GB
specific to the servo inverter. The resolvers are set
in their optimum position (angle) on delivery and
sealed with red paint.
WARNING!
Inappropriate alteration of the axial position
of the resolver or its angle may cause uncontrolled
acceleration or vibratory motion of the motor shaft.
If such symptoms occur, or if the resolver position
is inadvertently or erroneously changed, consulta-
tion with the responsible STÖBER sales office or
service agent will be necessary.
Tacho generators and rotor position
encoders
ES motors are supplied with a tacho generator and
rotor position encoder as feedback units for so-
called block-commutated servo inverters (e.g.
types 60 WKS/64 WKS from Seidel).
WARNING!
The angular position of components which
engage with each other - the tacho generator, ro-
tor position encoder (photo-electric barriers) - are
optimally set by the manufacturer and sealed (red
paint).
Any other angular position may cause considerable
faults in operation. Should faults occur, or the plant
behave unusually, it should be switched off imme-
diately and the responsible STÖBER sales or ser-
vice agency consulted.
Thermal winding protection
STÖBER-ES servo motors have standard cold con-
ductors (PTC thermistors) as thermal winding pro-
tection. Thermo contacts (bi-metallic openers) can
also be provided instead optionally.
Please observe the specifications in the SMS cat-
alogue or in the startup manual of the SDS-4000
servo converter!
The specifications according to DIN 44081 and DIN
44082 as well as the manufacturer specifications
of possible tripping devices to be used are applic-
able.
WARNING!
The connections and function of the ther-
mal winding protection elements and devices
must be checked by qualified experts before start-
up!
A passage test of the cold conductor - sensor cir-
cuit with testing light, crank inductor etc. is strict-
ly prohibited, because this leads to the immediate
destruction of the sensor! If subsequent measure-
ment of the cold resistance (at about 20° C) of the
sensor circuit is necessary, then the measuring
voltage should not exceed 2.5 V
V
during drilling). Measurement with Wheat-
DC
stone Bridge at a feed voltage of 4.5 V
mended. The cold resistance of the sensor circuit
Ω
should not exceed 810
. It is not necessary to
measure the hot resistance.
Exceeding the thermal limits leads to winding dam-
ages and motor failure.
For protection against damages to material and
person, basically, a correct connection of the ther-
mal motor protection must be used. Otherwise, it
could lead to loss of guarantee claims!
Under certain circumstances therefore, it may be
necessary to use appropriate tripping devices!
In addition, provisions must be made to ensure
that after addressing the thermal winding protec-
tion and the eventual cooling of the motor, dam-
ages attributable to unintentional automatic activa-
tion are prevented!
Forced cooling
Observe the instructions in the SMS catalogue and
the circuit diagrams for connecting forced fans for
cooling ES motors.
WARNING!
Test the operation of the forced fan on com-
missioning and then at regular intervals. A lack of
cooling will lead to overheating of the motors and
thus to premature failure of the winding.
4.2.3 Safety instructions for servo
inverters
SDS servo inverters
Observe the safety instructions in the installation
and commissioning instructions for SDS servo in-
verters.
Observe the respective specifications in the infor-
mation and safety instructions provided by the
manufacturer in the case of other makes.
4.2.4 Safety instructions for gear units
The relevant safety instructions for geared motors
(always point 4) in the operating instructions must
be observed.
5.
Carriage, storage and preservation
The motor and appropriate servo inverter (if fitted)
have been tested in the factory and subsequently
correctly packed. However, the consignment must
be checked for completeness immediately after
delivery and examined for damage which may have
occurred during carriage. Any claims must be reg-
istered with the carrier immediately.
Care must be taken that shafts and their bearings
are not damaged by shocks during internal carriage
of the unpacked motor.
Please Refer to 3.5 Accelerations
The motors should be stored in enclosed,
dry rooms only if possible. Storage in covered, out-
door areas is permissible for brief periods only,
during which they must be protected against all ad-
verse environmental effects. They must also be
protected against mechanical damage.
The motors must be neither transported not stored
lying on the fan hood. The eye bolts installed on the
motors must be used, employing suitable sus-
pending equipment, for transport.
The eye bolts are designed only for lifting the mo-
tor without additional, installed equipment such as
baseplates, gearings etc. All eye bolts installed on
geared motors must be employed for transport. If
eye bolts are removed after installation, the thread-
ed bores must be permanently sealed according to
per PTC ( 7 .5
the protection class.
DC
is recom-
Extreme fluctuations in temperature in high air hu-
DC
midity must be avoided during long periods of in-
termediate storage of the motor, to prevent con-
densation from forming. If long-term storage is an-
ticipated, the motor shaft must be preserved. In
the case of geared motors, the relevant instruc-
tions must be observed.
Before re-commisioning the winding must be
checked to its insulation resistance by qualified
specialist staff.
6.
Installation
Important note! The protective paint on the ends
of the shafts must be completely removed before
installation.
Note: Any solvents used must not come into con-
tact with the lips of the oil seals.

The following additional instructions must be ob-
served:
- the relevant installation instructions for geared
motors;
- the instructions and information under point 3
(Design and method of operation);
- the safety information under point 4 must also be
observed during installation.
7.
Commissioning
Electrical connections must fulfil applicable regula-
tions and be properly implemented by suitably
qualified staff (see DIN VDE 0105 or IEC 364 for a
ruling on qualified staff). The necessary details are
specified in the rating and name plates on the mo-
tor and its attachments (brake, forced cooling fan,
tachogenerator, PTC thermistor, etc.). It is impor-
tant to use a device to protect the motor winding
against thermal overload. If the motor is not pro-
tected, our guarantee for the motor winding will be
void.
Commissioning and safety instructions, primarily
for electrical connections (e.g. for gear units, ser-
vo inverters, etc.) will be found in the "TECHNICAL
INFORMATION SHEET" under "Commissioning ..."
or in the "OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS" for compo-
nents made by other manufacturers (see Appen-
dix).
N.B. Before commissioning the drive, ensure
that:
- the drive is not running against a stop;
- any brakes are released;
- all protective and safety devices have been cor-
rectly installed, even for the purposes of test run-
ning;
- the drive is rotating in the correct direction.
8.
Disposal
Observe the pertaining disposal regulations:
-
Oil according to the used oil ordinance (e.g. no
contamination with solvents, cleaning agents
or paint residues)
-
Separate components for recycling into:
- scrap iron
- aluminium
- non-ferrous metals (grub gears, motor wind-
ings)
