Forced cooling (if fitted)
Forced cooling enhances the performance data of
STÖBER ES motors by about 40%. The excellent
design dynamics are thus further improved. In
terms of the application this means that at times
and for specific load conditions and mass mo-
ments of inertia a change to the next higher frame
size can be avoided
Forced cooling is optional and the forced cooling
fan suitable for retro-fitting thanks to the modular
design, so that optimisation of the drive can also
be undertaken at a later stage. Technical data are
shown on the name plate and in the SMS cata-
logue.

Accelerations
On the factory, on the assembly and on the trans-
port, the engines are submitted to different types
of acceleration.
The values for request of shock indicate up to
which value the engine can be operated without
functionality failures. In the case of request for
shock, the constructive form of the engine serves
as a base in a mounted position.

The mentioned values are maximum values, as per
DIN EN 60068-2-27 . Shocks, as impacts with a
hammer or similar, for example upon placing a disc
over the activation shaft, must be avoided in all cas-
es.

In the case of coupling the engines to motion ag-
gregates, such as transmissions or pumps, the ad-
missible shock loads must be considered, such as
the tumbling moments of these aggregates.

Safety information

General safety instructions

This safety information is additional to the product-
specific operating instructions and must be strict-
ly observed for safety reasons. ES motor systems
are for use in power systems and equipment un-
der current European regulations.
The specifications and instructions in all operating
and other instructions supplied and in SMS cata-
logues must be observed. This is essential to avoid
danger and damage.
The respective national, local and plant-specific
regulations and requirements must also be ob-
served.
The technical details of special designs and mod-
els may differ. In the case of any uncertainty, we
would urgently recommend that you consult
STÖBER, stating the type designation and serial
number, or have the installation and maintenance
work carried out by a STÖBER service agent.
DANGER!
These electric machines, servo inverters
and associated units are resources for use in pow-
er systems and equipment. During operation (and
commissioning) this plant has dangerous, live ex-
posed parts, possibly moving or rotating parts, or
parts which may reach high temperatures (over
100° C). They may, therefore, cause serious bodily
harm or material damage if the necessary covers
are impermissibly removed, if wrongly used,
wrongly operated, insufficiently maintained or
touched.
Touching the motor housing at
a respective working temperature
with the bare hand can lead to nervous reac-
tions or to burnings.
The plant safety officer must therefore ensure that:
- Only qualified staff are commissioned to work on
the machines or units (see DIN VDE 0105 and IEC
364 for a ruling on qualified staff);
- Said staff always have access to the operating in-
structions supplied and other parts of the product
documentation for all related work, and that they
undertake to respect said documents consistent-
ly;
- Unqualified staff are prohibited from working on
the machines or units, or in their vicinity.
For reasons of clarity, the operating instructions do
not contain all the detailed information on possible
models and cannot therefore allow for every con-
ceivable circumstance in assembly, operation or
maintenance. Accordingly, the operating instruc-
tions only contain information which is necessary
for qualified staff for the correct industrial use of
the machines or units.
In the case of any uncertainty, missing operating
instructions or information of any other nature, the
necessary information must be requested from
the responsible STÖBER sales office or service
agency.
N.B.
In order to prevent faults, it is necessary to
have the specified maintenance work carried out
by experienced service staff at regular intervals.
Deviations from normal operation (higher power

consumption, temperatures or vibrations, unusual
noises or odours, tripping of monitoring devices
etc.) reveal that operation is adversely affected. To
prevent faults which may cause serious direct or in-
direct material damage or bodily harm, the respon-
sible service staff must be informed immediately.
If there is any doubt the plant in question must be
switched off immediately!

Product-specific safety information
4.2.1 Product-specific safety information
for ES motors
SMS drives consisting of STÖBER gear units, ES-
motors and servo inverters may be used as preci-
sion drive systems for various industrial applica-
tions. Typical applications are machine tools, pack-
aging machinery, robotics, feed spindles, convey-
or systems, sorting and shelving systems, bottling
plants, handling technology, laboratory and mea-
surement equipment, etc. Suitable environmental
conditions are covered areas with normal climatic
conditions. Design performance data (rated perfor-
mance data) is guaranteed from - 20° C to + 40° C
at a maximum installation altitude of 1000 m. The
data is only guaranteed with the original finish-
matte black RAL 9005 - as other finishes (painting
over) will cause a reduction in drive performance.
WARNING!
Only undertake work on the plant when it is
dead! The motor connections will be live when the
rotor is moving, due to the built-in permanent mag-
nets.
Do not apply hammer blows, pressure or shocks to
the motor shafts or motor housing.
4.2.2 Assembly, installation and safety
instructions for ES motors
ES motors are permanent-magnet (Sm
three-phase synchronous servo motors suitable
for operation with motor-controlled servo inverters.
The design of the motors facilitates their operation
with both block-commutated and sine-commutat-
ed servo inverters (pulse-controlled inverters). See
operating instructions, SDS and SMS catalogues.
WARNING!
Observe the recommendations for con-
necting the power supply and control units of the
motor (point 7 , Commissioning). Wrong connec-
tions may damage the drive, causing accidents
with serious consequences. Check the motor da-
ta (name plate and SMS catalogue) and the details
of the servo inverter before switching on.
Brakes
Test the operation of the built-in holding brake (if fit-
ted).
N.B.
Suitable measures must be taken to ensure
that suspended loads will not drop in the event of
an emergency stop or power failure. These mea-
sures must be accompanied by the applicable
Safety Instructions (e.g. VBG 8) in respect of stop-
ping under suspended loads.
WARNING!
False starts of the ES motor against closed
brakes (wrong connection, no potential) will dam-
age brakes and motors.
