Installation of a Slimline drive
• Pull the metal slide-in unit from the casing.
• Insert the Slimline drive into the slide-in unit, plug the connector on the Slimline drive to the
corresponding connection of the board.
• Fasten the Slimline drive in the slide-in unit by using 4 screws.
• Place the front frame over the Slimline drive so that it snaps in on the slide-in unit.
• Insert the slide-in unit back into the housing. Pay attention to the correction orientation other-
wise the slide-in unit cannot be inserted completely.
• Bolt down the rear housing lid on the housing with 3 counter-sunk screws, pay attention to the
correct orientation.
• Glue the plastic cover on the rear housing lid (remove the protective strip from the plastic cov-
er before that).
• The scope of delivery contains a foot, which can be used to place the drive enclosure in a
space-saving fashion.
Connection
There are two types of USB ports:
• Low power USB port
Can supply a maximum power of 100mA, e.g. the USB port for a keyboard or the USB port for
a USB hub without power unit. Such connections are not suitable for the operation of the drive
enclosure with the built-in CD/DVD drive.
• High power USB ports
Can supply a maximum power of 500mA, e.g. the USB port on the motherboard or the USB
port on a USB hub with its own power unit.
Please note:
Depending on the drive, a current of up to 1A is required during start up of the motor
of the CD/DVD drive. Furthermore, the control circuit board inside the Slimline cab-
inet also requires a certain current (approx. 100mA).
Therefore, even one single high power USB port does not supply enough current
for the CD/DVD drive.
Some USB ports supply more than 500 mA, although this is not standard.
For this reason, more than one USB port must be used for the connection, a special Y-cable is
www.conrad.com
provided for that.
Thus, the current of the USB ports is added up (500mA + 500mA = 1A), the operation of the
Slimline enclosure with the built-in CD/DVD drive is ensured.
Version 11/09
°
First connect both type A USB-plugs of the USB Y-cable to two free USB ports on your main-
board or to a USB hub with its own power unit. Only afterwards is the mini USB plug to be con-
nected with the hard disc case.
Driver Installation
Drivers for Windows ME/XP/Vista and Windows 7 are integrated in the operating system.
Connect the Slimline drive enclosure with the built-in CD/DVD drive to your computer; the
device is automatically recognised and the necessary drivers installed.
Handling
The product must not get damp or wet.
Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room in to a warm one.
The condensation that forms might destroy your unit. Allow the product to reach room tempera-
ture, before connecting it to the power supply and putting it in to use. This may take several
hours.
The following unfavourable conditions are to be avoided when installing or transporting the
product:
- Damp or excess air humidity
- Extreme cold (<5°C) or heat (>35°C), direct sunlight
- Dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows,
- Strong magnetic fields such as those found close to machinery or loudspeakers
The product is not a toy and should be kept out of the reach of children.
Any maintenance or repair work must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
When installing the device, make sure the cables are not bent or jammed.
The drive should not be moved while writing on a CD or DVD since this will lead to write errors.
Thus, the completed „burned" CD/DVD may not be readable or may have errors.
Cleaning
Before cleaning the device, disconnect it from the power supply. Use a clean, dry soft cloth for
cleaning.
Tips & Notes
• USB2.0 devices are backwards compatible. That means that the Slimline housing with the
installed CD/DVD drive also functions on conventional, „slow" USB1.1 ports – but then only at
the maximum USB1.1 speed (effective approx. 800kByte/s to 1MByte/s).
Several MBytes/sec is possible with USB 2.0.
• The scope of delivery does not contain the recording software; it must be ordered separately;
the same applies to play-back software for DVDs.

Some notebooks provide less than 500mA to their USB-ports. In such cases, oper-
ating the Slimline housing with the built-in CD/DVD drive might be impossible (drive
does not start up, is not recognised or similar). In this case, an external USB hub its
with own power supply unit should be used.
Alternatively a stabilised power supply unit (not included in delivery) may be used
to operate the Slimline enclosure (interior contact of the circular plug must have
plus/+, voltage +5V=, current min. 1A).
For the USB connection a conventional USB cable is required (the Y-cable should
not be used for operation with an external power supply unit!)
