• Card
• Data carrier with driver
• Operating instructions
Features
• ExpressCard34 type
• Two USB3.0 ports (backwards compatible with USB 2.0/1.1)
• Socket for external power adapter for power supply of USB devices with high power input
Driver installation
Install the driver first before inserting the plug-in card into the laptop.
• Insert the supplied data carrier into the respective drive of your laptop. If your laptop does
not have a CD/DVD drive, the driver can also be copied to e.g. a USB stick and then to
the laptop.
• Start the setup programme; at the time of preparation of these instructions, it could be
found in the directory „USB3.0 Host" and in the directory „NEC".
• Follow all of the instructions. Windows may need to be restarted after completing the
installation.
Inserting the plug-in card into the computer
Please note that the card is a „real" fast ExpressCard.
That means that the plug-in card does not function in common with USB/
ExpressCard adapters (e.g. to test an ExpressCard at a USB port or a „normal"
computer). No hardware detection will be done with such adapters.
Only use the plug-in card in a laptop with a fully functioning ExpressCard slot
and not with such an adapter.
• Insert the plug-in card into an ExpressCard slot on the laptop observing the correct orien-
tation. If your laptop has several ports, it does not matter which of the ports you use.
Consult the operating manual for your laptop i.e. how an ExpressCard should be inserted
and removed.
• Windows then recognises the new hardware and completes the driver installation.
• Both USB3.0 ports on the card are now available for connection of respective hardware.
Power supply for USB devices
Power for USB devices connected to the ExpressCard is either supplied by the laptop (e.g.
when USB stick, USB webcams or similar are connected to the ExpressCard) or by the power
adapter, which is delivered with these devices (e.g. when connecting a 8.9/3.5" USB hard disc).
However, if USB devices with a higher power input (e.g. a 6.35cm/2.5" USB hard disc) are to
be connected without their own power adapter, the power supply of the laptop might be over-
charged (hard disc is not recognised or does not start or it only makes quiet clicking noises),
or the battery life of the laptop might be considerably decreased.
Therefore, the card features a low voltage socket at its side to connect an external power
adapter (not supplied, needs to be ordered separately).
A power adapter with a stabilised output voltage of 5V= (direct current) and a current of ca.
2A is necessary, the positive pole (+) must be connected to the central contact of the round
plug, the negative pole (-) must be connected to the outer contact.
Please always observe the correct polarity and the correct voltage, otherwise
not only the ExpressCard will be damaged but also the connected USB devices
and the laptop!
In case of doubt, consult a specialist.
Connecting USB devices to the plug-in card
www.conrad.com
• USB2.0/1.1 devices
It is possible, of course, to operate all „old" USB2.0/1.1 devices with a USB3.0 port.
Version 03/10
Simply connect the USB device to one of the two USB ports on the plug-in card.
°
Use conventional USB2.0/1.1 connection cables to connect the devices.
USB2.0/1.1 devices do not become faster when operated on a USB3.0 port. However, if the
USB2.0 controller on the laptop works relatively slowly it is possible, for example, that
USB2.0 hard disks can transfer data faster via a USB3.0 port on the plug-in card.
• USB3.0 devices
In order to connect a USB3.0 device to the controller, a USB3.0 cable is necessary. At first
glance, the USB-A plug looks similar to a USB2.0/1.1 plug, however, it has additional inter-
nal connector pins.
The USB-B plug on a USB3.0 cable has a different shape.
A USB3.0 hard disk enclosure can also be operated on a USB3.0/2.0/1.1 port via a con-
ventional USB2.0/1.1 cable. A faster data transfer is not possible.
In order to use the fast data transfer of USB3.0, not only a USB3.0 controller is necessary
but also a USB3.0 device and an appropriate USB3.0 cable.
USB3.0 provides a theoretical data transfer of 3GBit (approx. 6000MByte/s). The practi-
cal transfer speed depends on the devices involved in the data transfer (internal and exter-
nal hard discs), the type of data (many small files or few large files) and many other factors.
Disconnecting the USB device from the plug-in card and
removing the plug-in card
• Complete any data transfer to the USB device before removing the USB cable from the
plug-in card.
In Windows, the connection to certain USB devices (e.g. USB hard discs) can be separa-
ted via an arrow symbol in the menu bar. Windows then closes all opened files and the
USB cable or USB device can be pulled out without risk.
• Please refer to the operating manual of your laptop on how to disconnect an ExpressCard
from the computer. The card mainly has to be slid into the laptop a little bit so that an inter-
nal special mechanical system ejects the card.
If an external power adapter is connected to the plug-in card, disconnect this from the plug-in
card first before disconnecting it from the mains supply.
Attaching/removing an ExpressCard54 adapter
An ExpressCard54 adapter is
attached to the plug-in card
with a metal holder (the adap-
ter might also be supplied
separately from the card).
The adapter makes sure that
the ExpressCard (slim type
for ExpressCard34 sockets)
does not cant in a wide
ExpressCard54 socket or slip
laterally.
The adapter is simply connected to the side of the ExpressCard and the metal holder is
inserted on the other side in the provided slot of the card.
To disconnect, the adapter is levered off and the metal holder is unhinged.
