d) Do not use step stools for access to another level;
e) Step stools should only be used for light work of short duration;
f) Use non-conductive step stools for unavoidable live electrical work;
g) Do not use the step stool outside in adverse weather conditions, such as strong
wind;
h) Sake precautions against children playing on the step stool;
i) Secure doors (not fire exits) and windows where possible in the work area;
j) Face the step stool when ascending and descending;
k) Keep a secure grip on the step stool when ascending and descending;
l) Do not use the step stool as a bridge;
m) Wear suitable footwear when climbing a step stool;
n) Avoid excessive side loadings e.g. drilling brick and concrete;
o) Do not spend long periods on a step stool without regular breaks (tiredness is a
risk);
p) Leaning step stools used for access to a higher level should be extended at least
1mabove the landing point;
q) Equipment carried while using a step stool should be light and easy to handle;
r) Avoid work that imposes a sideways load on step stools, such as side-on drilling
through solid materials (e.g. brick or concrete);
s) Maintain a handhold whilst working from a step stool or take additional safety
precautions if you cannot.
Repair, maintenance and storage. Repairs and maintenance shall be carried out by a
competent person and be in accordance with the producer's instructions. Step stools
should be stored in accordance with the producer's instruction. The stools must be stored
indoors, closed, clean, in a dry and ventilated place, and in a stable position.
Stools must be checked periodically (at least twice a year and approximately every 100
hours of work). Pay particular attention to the presence and condition of the non-slip feet,
uprights, pegs and safety components. The manufacturer must carry out any repairs.
