safety instructions. Liability for any and all consequential damage is excluded!
We do not accept liability for damage to property or personal injury caused by
improper handling or non-compliance with the safety instructions! The warranty
will be null and void in such cases.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible because
of safety and approval reasons (CE). Never dismantle the product.
• The product is only designed for use in dry indoor locations, it must not get damp or wet;
lethal danger of electric shock!
• The product is not a toy and should be kept out of the reach of children.
• Do not leave packing materials unattended. They may become dangerous playthings for
children.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental drops,
even from a low height.
Connection
To connect the hard drive to a computer, use either the USB connection or the eSATA
connection. It is not possible to connect via eSATA and via USB at the same time!
• Turn off the external hard drive.
• Connect the low voltage plug from the mains adapter (included in the delivery) with the corresponding
socket on the back of the external hard drive.
• Connect the mains adapter to the mains voltage.
a) Operation via USB
• Switch your computer on, and wait until the operating system has booted completely.
• Connect the external hard drive to a free USB port on the computer and switch it on.
• Windows automatically recognizes the external hard drive; the required drivers are included in Windows.
b) Operation via eSATA
• Switch the computer off (first save all open data and shut down the operating system).
• Connect the external hard drive to the eSATA port on your computer, using an eSATA cable.
• Turn on the external hard drive.
• Switch on your computer, and wait until the operating system has booted completely.
Why is operation via eSATA different to that with USB?
The external hard drive might not be recognized via eSATA, if it is connected to a computer that
is already running, or if it is first switched on after the operating system has already booted.
This, however, depends on the eSATA controller (on the motherboard or plug-in card), on its
driver and your operating system.
If the external hard drive is not recognized, please reboot your operating system, while the
external hard drive is left on.
Partitioning / formatting the hard drive
If the external hard drive does not appear as a new drive in your operating system (e.g. in the Windows
File Manager), check first whether the external hard drive was recognized by the operating system (in
the Windows Control Panel).
As described in the „Connection" section, when operating via eSATA, it is possible that the
external hard drive will not be recognized if it was not plugged in and turned on before the
computer was switched on.
It is possible that the hard is already formatted (e.g. file system „NFTS"), in which case the external
hard drive will automatically appear as a new drive in the Windows File Manager. A re-partitioning or
formatting is not required.
In Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, partitioning and formatting are very easy to perform from the
www.conrad.com
Control Panel. This is where you select the correct hard drive and create a new partition. It then has to
be formatted (Quick formatting is sufficient).

Handling
Tips & Notes
• To calculate „MBytes" or „GBytes", there are two possibilities.
For „experienced computer-pros" 1kByte is exactly 1024 Bytes (binary =2^10). 1MByte is
1024*1024=1048576 Bytes (binary =2^20), etc. For „normal" users, 1kByte (1 „kilobyte") is only 1000
Bytes, just as 1 kilometre is exactly 1000 metres. So 1 MByte is „only" 1 million bytes, i.e. 1,000,000
bytes.
• USB devices can be connected and disconnected during operation.
You should, however, take into account that data may be corrupted or the operating system may
crash if the connection cable is disconnected while data are being transferred (or the external hard
drive is switched off or the mains adapter is disconnected).
In Windows ME/XP, an arrow symbol is displayed in the menu bar when a USB device is in operation.
Click on this arrow symbol to „separate" the device, i.e. to terminate data transmission, so you can dis-
connect the USB connecting cable without risking the loss of data.
When operating via eSATA, however, it depends on the eSATA controller (e.g. on the motherboard)
and its driver, whether plugging and unplugging is possible during operation or whether the above-
mentioned arrow symbol appears in the menu bar.
• USB2.0 devices are backwards compatible. This means that the external hard drive also works on
conventional „slower" USB1.1 ports – but in this case only with the maximum USB1.1 speed (in effect
approx. max. 1MByte/s). Several MBytes/s are possible with USB2.0, depending on the controller in
your computer.
• The hard drive cannot be operated via USB in DOS or Windows NT.

When partitioning and formatting, all existing data on the hard drive will be lost. Therefore,
make sure that you select the correct hard drive!
• Only use in dry indoor locations. The product must not get damp or wet. Avoid the follo-
wing unfavourable environmental conditions at the installation location and during trans-
portation:
- Excessive humidity or damp
- Extreme cold or heat, direct sunlight
- Dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows,
- Strong magnetic fields such as those found in the vicinity of machinery or loudspeakers
• Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room to a warm
one. The condensation that forms may damage the device under certain circumstances.
Furthermore, there is a danger of an electric shock from the power supply!
Allow the device to reach room temperature before connecting it to the power supply.
This may take several hours.
• Any maintenance or repair work must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
Never take apart the device, there are no serviceable parts inside.
• Only operate the external hard drive using the enclosed mains adapter.
• If you use the support base to operate the hard drive vertically in order to save space,
make sure that the external hard drive does not fall over, because this will damage it, and
there is also a risk for data loss! Only place the hard drive on a level, stable surface.
• Do not move the hard drive during operation; further, wait at least 30 seconds after swit-
ching it off.
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cables are neither kinked nor pinched.
• Do not cover the mains adapter or the external hard drive; do not place any objects on
the device. Never use the product in the direct next to a heater, etc.
Therefore, the operating system or programs for managing data carriers can show diffe-
rent values, depending on the calculation method used. Hard drive manufacturers calcu-
late using 1000 bytes = 1kByte.
Please dispose of the product, when it is no longer of use, according to the current statutory
requirements.
