Solar lamp with earth spike
Item-No. 57 19 18 Model: Stainless steel
Item-No. 57 21 29 Model: Synthetic
Intended use
The product is a decorative, mood-setting orientation lamp for use in gardens and on terraces.
The solar lamp can be used e.g. to mark paths at night or as discrete, atmospheric lighting.
By means of the integrated solar panel the rechargeable battery is charged during the day.
The solar lamp switches on the light automatically when darkness falls, and the integrated
rechargeable battery provides the energy for the light. The light is generated by one LED (light
emitting diode). This guarantees a relatively high light intensity with small power consumption.
During the day, the light of the solar lamp switches off automatically.
The solar lamp is designed for private use and not for commercial use. Use of this device in a
way other than described above is not permitted.

Assembly and installation
Select a suitable place to set up the stone, e.g. the edge of a terrace, a garden path or a flower
bed.
Version 07/07
In order to allow the batteries to be charged sufficiently, the product must be installed in a way
that exposes the solar cell as long as possible to direct sunlight. Make sure that the solar cell
°
is not covered or shaded.
Do not position the solar lamp under bushes, trees, porches etc., since this cuts down the sun
exposure. The solar cell is not effectively used in this case and the rechargeable battery is not
sufficiently charged. To allow the solar cell to function in an optimal way, sun rays should fall
on it as vertically as possible from above.
The solar lamp should be placed where the solar cell is exposed to sunlight for at
least eight hours each day.
Do not install the solar lamp directly next to other light sources, such as e.g. yard
lights, street lights etc. as otherwise the light of the solar lamp will not light cor-
rectly at night.
Make sure it is secure. Do not use force during assembly or installation, e.g.
through hammer impacts on the stand pipe, as this damages the product.
Place the solar lamp in a way so that nobody can fall over it. If the heading sec-
tion is removed, the standpipe and the earth spike must always be removed as
well so that they do not represent a hazard.
For assembly attach both standpipes (3, 4) to the bottom of the lampshade (2) and then the
earth spike (5).
After this the solar lamp may be mounted in an appropriate location, push the earth spike (5)
into the ground (lawn, flowerbed or such). Push the earth spike almost completely into the
ground for the solar lamp to stand firm.
Handling rechargeable batteries
A rechargeable battery type NiMH, size AA/Mignon is integrated into the solar lamp. For safe-
ty reasons, only changeable with tools (screwdriver).
Please observe the following safetey instruction when dealing with rechargeable bat-
teries:
• Keep batteries out of reach of children. Do not leave batteries lying around. There is the risk
of it being swallowed by children or domestic animals, lethal danger! If swallowed, consult a
doctor immediately.
• Make sure that the batteries are not short-circuited, opened or thrown into a fire. There is a
danger of explosion.
• Check that the polarity is correct when inserting/changing the battery (pay attention
to plus and minus).
• Chemical liquids can leak from old or used batteries, damaging the device. Leaking or dam-
aged batteries may burn the skin if touched. Under these circumstances, protect your hands
with suitable gloves.
• Only use a battery of the correct size and the recommended type.
• Only insert rechargeable batteries into the solar lamp, not normal batteries that cannot be
charged. There is a risk of fire and explosion!
Initial operation
If the solar cell on the top of the lamp (1) is covered with a transport protection
foil, remove this now.
When first operating the solar lamp, it needs approx. 24 hours of sunlight (in the summer
months, longer in the other months) to charge the integrated battery.
Therefore switch the sliding switch (8) during the day into the „ON" position and during the
night in the „OFF" position. The battery is charged during the day,
The switch (8) is protected inside under the lampshade (2). This can be removed
by turning it to the left anti-clockwise.
Position "ON": The solar lamp is switched on. In case of low ambient light, the solar lamp
comes on automatically and turns off again in normal ambient light. During daytime the inte-
grated battery is charged.
Position "OFF": The solar lamp is switched off.
Put the top of the lamp onto the transparent cover plate again and turn it clockwise until the
top of the lamp snaps in.
General handling of solar lamps
The performance of the solar lamp varies according to the season, depending on the hours of
sunlight and the strength of the sun.
Long periods without sufficient sun radiation (especially in winter) can lower the charge state
of the battery, thus not allowing for longer light periods. The battery stores less energy during
the day than it consumes at night. Thus, the light duration is inevitably reduced.
This could also mean that the battery runs completely flat and becomes damaged as a result.
Therefore switch the solar lamp off in good time (switch position = OFF).
Keep the top side of the solar lamp with the solar panel clean.Take particular care
that the cover plate does not become dirty and that it is kept free of snow and ice
in winter. This reduces the capacity of the solar cell.
Cold temperatures have a negative influence on the service life of the batteries (reduced illu-
mination time of the LED at night).
With respect to a long, trouble-free period of operation, we recommend storing the solar lamp
in a dry, warm room during the winter or when it is not used for a longer period. For this switch
off the solar lamp (switch position = OFF).
Remove the battery when storing the device and e.g. recharge it with an appropriate charger.
For removing resp. changing the battery observe the following chapter.
Remove/change battery
For safety reasons the battery is only changeable with tools (screwdriver).
The cover plate with the LED can be carefully removed by simply unscrewing the four cross
head-screws (6) inside of the top of the lamp (1). Underneath, the battery can be found in a
bracket. Mark the polarity (pay attention to plus/+ and minus/-) and remove the battery.
Alternatively insert a new battery of the same type (NiMH) and the same capacity (observe
data on the original battery) into the right polarity, replace the cover plate with the LED cor-
rectly and screw it down.
For charging proceed as described above in „Initial operation".
In order to attain a good capacity, we recommend changing the rechargeable battery every 12
months. A replacement is necessary if the duration of lighting during the night is too short
despite sufficient charge during the day.
Maintenance and cleaning
The product does not require any maintenance apart from replacing the rechargeable batter-
ies as necessary.
Only a professional repair shop should attempt to maintain or clean the device.
The exterior of the product can be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with water. Do not use
aggressive cleaning agents or chemical solutions which could damage the housing or impair
operation.
Disposal
Electrical and electronic products do not belong in the household waste!
Please dispose of the device, when it is no longer of use, according to the current
statutory requirements.
Disposal of spent rechargeable batteries
You, as end user are under legal obligation (Battery Regulation) to take back all used batter-
ies and rechargeable batteries, to dispose of them via domestic waste is not permitted!
Pollutant-containing batteries/rechargeables are identified by the symbols
alongside which draw attention to prohibition of disposal with domestic waste.
The indications for the decisive heavy metals concerned are: Cd = cadmium,
Hg = mercury, Pb = lead.
You can hand in your used batteries/accumulators at the official collection points
of your community or everywhere batteries/rechargeables are sold.
You thus fulfil the legal requirements and make your contribution to the protection of the envi-
ronment!
The battery integrated in the solar lamp must be disposed off separately. For this
observe chapter „Remove/change battery".
