Deutsches U-Boot/German Submarine TYPE VII D " M i n e n l e g e r "
Eine der wichtigsten Waffen der SeekriegsfOhrung war die Mine. Urn diese Waffe
dicht an die Schifffahrtswege der Gegner zu bringen, nutzte die Deutsche
Kriegsma rine besonders U-Boote. Verwendet wurden dazu, auBer den
Kampfboottypen II, VII und IX, die grOBten deutschen U-Boote, die speziellen
Minenleger des Typs X B , die mit ihrer GrOBe von 1760 tons besonders fur
Fernunternehmen konzipiert warden waren. Wahrend die kleineren Bootstypen nur
solche Minen transportieren konnten, die durch die Torpedorohre passten, konnten
die Boote vom Typ XB als einzige Ankertauminen vom Typ SMA transportieren.
Aufgrund ihrer Schwerfalligkeit u n d d e r A u s r u s t u n g m i t n u r zwei
Hecktorpedorohren hatten sie keinen groBen Kampfwert und nur acht Boote dieses
Typs wurden gebaut.
Urn weitere Transportkapazitat fur SMA Minen zu bekommen, lag es nahe den
erfolgreichen Typ VII zu einem Minenleger umzubauen, ohne die positiven
Eigenschaften des Grundentwurfs zu verlieren. Um dies zu erreichen wurde eine
zusatzliche Rumpfsektion von 9,80 m Lange hinter dem Turm eingef(igt, wodurch
sich die Gesamtlange auf 76,9 m vergroBerte. In dieser Sektion befanden sich flint
vertikal angeordnete Silos, die je 3 Minen aufnehmen konnten. Die Rohre waren nicht
Teil des DruckkOrpers, sondern standig bewassert. Nach dem Scharfstellen wurden
die Minen nach unten in eine Tiefe von bis zu 250 m aus den Rohren entlassen.
Die sechs Boote des nun VII D genannten Typs U-213 U-218 wurden bei der Kieler
Germania-Werft gebaut und zwischen dem 30.08.1941 und dem 31.01.1942 in
Dienst gestellt.
Ihre Verdrangung betrug aufgetaucht 965 t und 1080 t im getauchten Zustand. Die
Verlangerung bewirkte auch eine VergrOBerung des Treibstoffvorrats. Dadurch
vergrOBerte sich die max. Fahrtstrecke von 8550 sm bei 10 kn ( Typ VII C, aufgetaucht)
auf 11200 sm bei 10 kn. Die leicht verringerte HOchstgeschwindigkeit fiel dabei nicht
weiter ins Gewicht. Da die Boote ansonsten einem Typ VII C entsprachen, konnten sie
anders als die groBen Minenleger auch in die "Atlantikschlacht" geworfen werden
und tatsachlich wurden auf insgesamt 31 Feindfahrten, die von Typ VII D Booten
durchgefuhrt wurden, nur 9 Minenunternehmungen durchgefuhrt. Einem von U-218
am 18.08.1944 vor Lizzard Head gelegten Minenteppich fiel noch am 10.07.1945 der
brt. Fischtrawler *Kned" zum Opfer.
Die ab 1943 vollig veranderte Kriegssituation machte den Umbau aller deutschen
Kampfboote notwendig. So wurden auch die verbliebenen Typ VII D von ihren unnutz
gewordenen 8,8 cm GeschOtzen befreit und erhielten verstarkte Flak-Bewaffnung.
Sogar eine zweite Flak-Plattform wurde nachgerOstet, welche die ersten zwei Minen-
Silos abdeckte. Spater wurde zumindest U-218 auch noch mit einem Schnorchel
nachgerOstet.
Auf das Konto der sechs Boote gehen 10 Schiffe mit zusammen 42.622 tons.
Desweiteren konnten Schiffe mit zusammen 37.597 tons beschadigt werden. Eine
unbekannte Zahl an Seeleuten fand dabei den Tod. Demgegenuber stehen f tint
versenkte VII D U-Boote (Totalverluste) mit zusammen 241 gefallenen U-Bootfahrern.
Nur U-218 Oberlebte den Krieg und lief am 08.05.1945 in Bergen/Norwegen ein. Das
Boot sank letztlich im Rahmen der "Operation Deadlight" am 04.12.1945 im Schlepp
der "HMS Southdown".

One of the most important weapons of sea-warfare was the mine. The German Navy
used special submarines to deliver this weapon right on to the enemies navigational
routes. Apart from the attack U-Boat types II, VII and IX, the largest German U-Boats,
special Minelayers designated XB with a Gross of 1760 ton's that were specially
designed for long distance operations were also used for these tasks. Whilst the
smaller U-Boats could only carry mines that passed through the torpedo tubes, only
the XB type U-boats could carry SMA type Cable Anchored Mines. Due to her
unwieldiness and armament of only two stern torpedo tubes they had no great
operational value and only eight of these U-boats were built. The easiest way to
further increase the transport capacity of SMA mines was to covert the successful Type
VII into a minelayer without losing the positive characteristics of the basic design. In
order to achieve this a further hull section 9.80m (31ft 9ins) in length was inserted
directly behind the conning tower, whereby the total length increased to 76.9m
(250ft Dins). Five vertical Silo's were installed in this section, each of which could hold
three mines. The tubes were always filled with water and not part of the pressurised
hull section. After being armed, the mines would be discharged downwards from the
tubes below into a depth of up to 250m (800ft).
Si x U-boats of the newly designated Type VIID, U-213 to U-218, were built by the
Germania Shipyard in Kiel and entered service between 30.08.1941 and 31.01.1942.
They had a displacement of 965 tons on the surface and 1080 tons submerged. The
hull extension also enabled an increase in the fuel capacity which extended the
maximum range from 8550nm at 10kt in the Type VIIC(Surfaced) to 11200nm at 10kt
in the Type VIID. The slight reduction in maximum speed did play an important role.
Because the U-boats were otherwise identical to the Type VIIC they could in difference
to the larger minelayers be thrown into the Battle of the Atlantic and actually, out of a
total of 31 missions carried out by Type VIID U-boats against the enemy, only 9 mine
laying missions were completed. On 10.07.1945 the British fishing trawler "Kned"
fell victim to a carpet of mines laid by U-218 on 18.08.1944. The totally changed state
of war after 1943 made the conversion of all German U-boats necessary. The
remaining type VIID were stripped of their useless 8.8cm guns and received more anti-
aircraft weapons. Even a second anti-air weapons platform which covered the first
two mine silo's, was added. U-218 at least was later modified with a snorkel.
T en ships with a total of 42,622 ton's can be credited to the six U-boats. Further ships
with a tonnage of 37,597 ton's were damaged. An unknown number of seamen died.
In contrast stands a total loss of five sunken Type VIID U-boats with 241 submariners
lost. Only U-218 survived the war and sailed into Bergen, Norway on the 08.05.1945.
She finally sank whilst on tow by "HMS Southdown" within the framework of
"Operation Deadlight" on the 04.12.1945.
