Capacitive Distance Sensor
Condensed Guide
Intended use
This sensor is intended for distance or position
measurement and is installed in a system as part of a
measuring system.
Flawless function is ensured only when used in conjunction
with original BALLUFF accessories. Use of any other
components will void the warranty.
Non-intended use
The sensor may not be used in applications where
personal safety or the integrity of machines depends on
proper function of the device (not a safety component in
accordance with EU Machinery Directive). The sensor may
not be used in explosion hazard areas.
Balluff assumes no liability for damage resulting from
improper use of the sensor. Likewise Balluff assumes no
liability if the sensor becomes damaged.
Safety notes
Installation and startup may only be performed by trained
specialists.
If defects and unresolvable faults occur in the sensor, take
it out of service and secure against unauthorized use.

Calibration
To obtain the full output signal range (4...20 mA) when
measuring objects with low relative dielectric constant
(εr ≤ 10) it is possible to calibrate the sensor to the specific
material characteristics and object size.
To do this, bring the object up to the sensor (distance
S = 0 mm) and turn the trim potentiometer on the rear of
the sensor until the signal LED comes on green. When
calibrating ensure that the object is level with the sensor
surface and there is no interfering object directly behind
the object in direct line with the active sensor surface.
If the signal LED comes on red, turn the trim potentiometer
clockwise, and if the signal LED comes on orange turn it
counter-clockwise. The sensor is now calibrated to the
new object properties.
This calibration ensures that the sensor always provides
the full output signal range as long as the object is suffici-
ently large and has a sufficient relative dielectric constant.
For objects with an insufficient dielectric constant the
signal range will be limited. Objects with a relative dielectric
constant εr of approx. 1 or too small a size will not cause a
signal change.
Corresponding reduction factors as a function of object
properties can be found in the table.

When using the sensor for material selection, no calibration
is necessary unless the trim potentiometer has been
turned from its factory setting. By default the sensor is
calibrated for a metal tag.
