B. Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 600 and 800 printers
B1. Installing the Deskjet 600 / 800 printer drivers
During the installation of your HP Deskjet software ensure that your PC is connected directly to the
Deskjet (not via the IPS). Once your have installed the PC drivers connect the Deskjet and the PC to
the IPS.
B2. Using the Deskjet driver with the Intelligent Printer Switch
To use the Deskjet printer driver with the Intelligent Printer Switch you will need to select non-
bidirectional printing mode. You can do this by running the Deskjet printer driver configuration
program which is installed when you install your Deskjet printer drivers. Depending upon your
Deskjet model the configuration program may be HPVCNFIG.EXE or HPCFG02.EXE or similar
(you will find the program in the WINDOWS directory). Run the program and de-select
Bidirectional Communication to activate non bidirectional printing mode.
B3. Setting Windows timeout values for maximum ease of use
Microsoft Windows has in-built buffering support that allows you to buffer print jobs in your PC
whilst the shared printer is in use by another computer. To make use of this buffering you should
make sure that the print manager is enabled (Windows 3.11). For optimum ease of use we
recommend that you set a high Windows printing timeout period of 900 seconds (15 minutes). This
avoids the print jobs from stalling if the printer is in use for some time after your print job has been
generated. You will find the timeout settings in the Control Panel >> Printers >> Connect
menu on Windows 3.11 (set both timeout values to 900). If you are using Windows 95 you will find
the timeout settings under the printer icon in the Properties >> Details menu. Again, set both
timeout settings to 900.
C. GDI printers
The Intelligent Printer Switch is not compatible with printers that will only operate in GDI mode.
These printers rely on having a direct cable connection from a PC to the printer. True GDI printers
will not print text files from DOS and require Microsoft Windows for their operation. Confusingly
some GDI printers support more than just the GDI printing mode so it may be worth trying them
with the IPS before assuming that they will not work. If you require a printer sharer for GDI printers
we recommend the SmartShare range of bidirectional printer switches.
