4 The Sunny Boy Grounding Set
As a response to the present recommendations of module manufacturers, SMA
Technologie AG provides two different grounding sets as optional accessories:
• The "positive grounding set" for positive generator grounding (order no. ESHV-P-
NR).
The positive grounding set has three connections, colored red, white and blue.
The module is coated with a red protective cover. The positive grounding set is
used, for example, for modules with back-contact cells.
• The "negative grounding set" for negative generator grounding (order no. ESHV-
N-NR).
The negative grounding set has four connections, colored red, black, white and
blue. The module is coated with a black protective cover. The negative grounding
set is used, for example, for thin-film modules.
Your module manufacturer can provide you with up-to-date information on the
necessity and type of grounding.
Advantages:
• The installer can easily install the grounding set add-on for transformer inverters
of type Sunny Boy ("SB") and Sunny Mini Central ("SMC").
• After installation of the grounding set, the inverter's ground fault display only
indicates undesired ground faults.
• Installation costs are reduced due to the device-internal grounding.
• Device-internal grounding with the grounding set has no effect on the system's
EMC behavior.
• The grounding provides high system safety via internal thermal fuse.
• In the event of a triggered fuse, the ground fault display is activated.
If the grounding set is installed, and the inverter's red LED illuminates, an
undesired grounding fault is present in the PV generator. Remove the cause of
the grounding fault, and replace the grounding set.
