these operating instructions, we will assume no liability for any resulting
personal injury or damage to property. Such cases will invalidate the warranty/
guarantee.
a) General
• The product is not a toy. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
• Do not leave packaging material lying around carelessly. It may become a
dangerous toy for children.
• Protect the product from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, strong jolts, high
humidity, moisture, flammable gases, vapours and solvents.
• Do not place the product under any mechanical stress.
• If it is no longer possible to operate the product safely, take it out of operation and
protect it from any accidental use. Safe operation can no longer be guaranteed
if the product:
- is visibly damaged,
- is no longer working properly,
- has been stored for extended periods in poor ambient conditions or
- has been subjected to any serious transport-related stresses.
• Handle the product carefully. Jolts, impacts or a fall even from a low height may
damage the product.
• Always observe safety and operating instructions of any other devices which are
connected to the product.
• Consult a technician if you are not sure how to use or connect the product, or if
you have concerns about safety.
• Maintenance, modifications and repairs must be done by a technician or an
authorized repair center.
• If you have questions which remain unanswered by these operating instructions,
contact our technical support service or other technical personnel.
b) Persons and product
• Remove the USB cable from your computer if you are not going to use the product
for a prolonged period of time.
• Only use the product in temperate climates. It is not suitable for use in tropical
climates.
• Never move the product with an installed hard disk drive when the hard drive is in
operation. Doing so may make the read/write heads on the hard disk drive touch
the magnetic disk. This may lead to data loss and damage the hard disk drive.
Turn the product off and wait at least 30 seconds (until the magnetic disks in the
hard disk drive have stopped rotating) before you move the product.
• Do not place the product in the proximity of speakers or machines that produce a
strong magnetic field.
• Only touch the casing on the sides of the hard drive; do not touch the circuit board
containing the electronic components. This may result in electrostatic discharges
that destroy the hard drive.
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cable is not pinched, kinked or
damaged by sharp edges.
• Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold room
into a warm one. The condensate generated may destroy the product. Allow the
product to reach room temperature before connecting it and putting it to use. This
may take several hours.
• Use suitable padding to protect the surfaces of valuable furniture against
scratches and dents.
Installing a hard drive
• Open the cover on the side of the hard disk enclosure. Slide it lengthways out of the terminal
strip on the circuit board.
• Insert a suitable SATA hard disk (<9.5 mm height). Ensure that the hard drive is inserted in
the correct orientation in relation to the terminal strip. Place the SATA hard disk correctly onto
the terminal strip on the circuit board. Ensure that the SATA connector on the circuit board
is inserted correctly.
• After inserting the hard disk, slide the side cover back into place on the hard disk enclosure.
Place it into the guide rails in the correct orientation and slide it in the direction of the terminal
strip on the circuit board until it clicks into place.
Be very careful when moving and transporting the hard drive housing if a hard disk
drive is inserted. The hard disk may move or even fall out in the event of sudden
movements. We recommend that you do not move the hard drive when it is in use.
Setup
• Insert the required USB cable into a USB port on your computer. Use the USB-C™ to
USB-C™ cable if your computer has a USB-C™ port. If your computer only has a USB A
port, use the USB A to USB-C™ cable.
• Connect the USB plug on the other end of the USB cable to the USB-C™ 3.0 port on the
hard disk enclosure. The blue LED will turn on when the product is supplied with a current.
• The computer's operating system will automatically recognise the product upon first use and
install the necessary drivers. The drivers are included in your operating system.
• The green LED flashes when data is transferred between the hard drive and your computer.
To avoid data loss, never disconnect the USB cable from the product when data is being
transferred.
The hard disk drive in the hard disk enclosure does not require an external power
supply. It operates in "bus-powered mode". This means that the current provided by
the computer via USB (2 A according to USB 3.0 standards) is sufficient to operate
an external 6.35 cm/2.5" hard drive. The voltage of the power supply must not
exceed the standard voltage of 5 V (±0.2 V). A higher voltage may damage the
product or result in safety hazards.
Driver installation
• The required drivers are already included in the operating system. A separate driver is
therefore not included with the product.
• Note that a suitable USB 3.0 controller is required for use via USB 3.0. This controller is built
into many modern mainboards, but if necessary, you can update your mainboard using an
additional plug-in card.
Partitioning/formatting the hard disk drive
• If you want to use a hard disk drive that has not been used before, it must be partitioned and
formatted before it appears in the file manager of your operating system and can be used as
a disk drive. To format the hard disk drive, refer to the instructions for the operating system
that you are using.
• In Windows
, you can partition and format the hard disk drive via the Control Panel. For
®
example, in Windows
7, go to "System and Security" under Control Panel to format the
®
hard disk drive. Click on "Administrative Tools" and then on "Create and format hard disk
partitions". Select the correct hard drive and create a new partition.
• Format the newly created partition. A quick format is sufficient. Depending on the capacity of
the hard disk drive, a regular format may take a long time to complete.
• Before formatting the hard disk, back up existing data to avoid losing your data.
• Consult a technician if you are unsure about partitioning/formatting the hard disk drive.
