It is important your handpiece be properly cleaned and lubricated at all times. The life
of the bearings, "O" rings and rotating parts will greatly decrease if your handpiece is
not maintained properly. Clean and lubricate the handpiece before each autoclave cycle.
Caution: Wear masks, gloves and protective eye wear.
1. M anually clean and remove all visible soil, such as saliva, from the handpiece prior
to sterilization. Do not use cold sterilants or solutions containing phenols, acids or
chlorines. Do not place the handpiece in an ultrasonic bath.
2. L ubricate handpiece using dental handpiece lubricant which will withstand
autoclave temperature/pressure.
3. S pray lubricant/cleaner into drive air hole at back of handpiece until lubricant runs
from the handpiece head.
4. C onnect the handpiece to the air supply. Insert a bur/blank securely into the
handpiece. Run the handpiece for 30-40 seconds. Dirt and debris will be expelled.
Wipe exterior surface of handpiece with dry 2 x 2 gauze or disposable towel.
5. R emove the rotating instrument from the handpiece. Insert the handpiece into a
sterilization pouch. Place into a steam autoclave. Sterilize at 135ºC (275ºF) per
autoclave manufacturer's parameters. Do not let the handpiece remain in pouch under
wet or damp conditions. Such conditions can result in corrosion of internal parts and
shorten the life of the handpiece. Never immerse handpiece in cold sterilization or
chemical disinfectants. Never autoclave with a bur in the handpiece.
6. A fter removing the handpiece from the autoclave, allow the handpiece to return to
room temperature before use.
