seconds, until the yellow LED above the button starts flashing. The unit now calibrates
automatically pH 7 and the display will show "E 7" .
When the pH 7 calibration is finished, the yellow LED above the "EICHEN pH 7" (Cali-
brate pH 7) button goes out.
Take the sensor out of the pH 7 solution and briefly rinse it in distilled water.
Place the pH sensor into the pH 4 calibration solution
Wait for approx. one minute until the measured value remains stable.
Push the "EICHEN pH 4" (Calibrate pH 4) button and hold it down for about 3
seconds, until the yellow LED above the button starts flashing. The unit now calibrates
automatically pH 4 and the display will show "E 4"
When the pH 4 calibration is finished, the yellow LED above the"EICHEN pH 4"
(Calibrate pH 4) button goes out.
Herewith the calibration process has been completed. Rinse the sensor with distilled water and
place it into the sensor holder in the aquarium.
The pH-Controller is now operative. The display shows the actual pH value of the aquari-
um water. The calibration process lasts - depending on the condition of the pH sensor -
about 5-10 minutes.
*Note: The display flashes when the measured value differs more than +/- pH 0.5 from the set
value (alarm function). This is specially so regarding the calibration solution pH 4. The fact that
the display flashes does not influence the calibration process.
2.4
Automatic calibration reminder / calibration rhythm
The pH-Controller features an automatic calibration reminder: every 4 weeks the yellow LED
above the push buttons "EICHEN pH 7" (Calibrate pH 7) and "EICHEN pH 4" (Calibrate pH 4)
will light in order to remind you to recalibrate the sensor
the normal measuring and control functions of the pH-Controller. The sensor can always be cali-
brated, also in case the LEDs are not lit. In order to calibrate please refer to 2.3. Especially when
using the pH-Controller for the first time or in case of using a new sensor, a calibration should
be carried out additionally after one week of use.

General notes on the pH sensor
Never let the pH sensor dry out!
On pH sensors which had not been in use for some time, the protective cap
should be filled with KCL solution (Order No. 1448) and pushed onto the tip of the
sensor
. Do not store pH-sensors in destilled water!
12
Do not immerse the complete sensor in water. The sensor cap and the cable
connection should always be at least 2 cm above the water level
Never place the sensor cable alongside other electric cables over a longer
distance. This will avoid a possible interference of other circuits with the measuring
results.
IMPORTANT: Should the sensor not be in the aquarium water, the unit will
measure "incorrectly" and will regulate accordingly - danger for your fish!
Therefore check the water level regularly!
Always handle the pH sensor with great care. Make sure there are no kinks in the
sensor cable.
Should the head of the sensor be soiled, the globular measuring tip can be cleaned
carefully with a soft cloth - dab only, do not rub!
Afterwords place the sensor tip into KCL solution for about 12 hours. Then rinse
and calibrate. Should this not be sufficient, replace it with a new sensor.
2.6
Service life of a pH sensor
All pH sensors are subject to wear and will be worn out in time. When in continuous use,
their service life usually lasts 12 to 48 months, with an average of 24 months. The wear
varies individually and depends on water hardness, acidity, algae growth, general level of
pollution, mechanical wear and tear, maintenance, etc.
