Bestimmungsgemäße Verwendung
Das Produkt ist zum Einsatz in PC-kompatiblen Notebooks mit PCMCIA-Einschub
vorgesehen und dient dort zum Anschluss an ein bestehendes Netzwerk.

Bei Schäden, die durch Nichtbeachtung dieser Bedienungsanleitung
verursacht werden, erlischt der Garantieanspruch.

Auf der einen Seite der PCMCIA-Karte befindet sich die Buchsenleiste, über die beim
Einschieben in den PCMCIA-Port die Verbindungen hergestellt werden.
Auf der anderen Seite ist eine winzige Flachbuchse zu erkennen.
In diese muss der Spezialstecker des mitgelieferten Adapters korrekt und vorsich-
tig eingesteckt werden. Achten Sie darauf, dass der Stecker nicht mit Gewalt ein-
gesteckt wird. Bei Zerstörung des Steckers erlischt jeglicher Garantieanspruch!
Wenn Sie den Stecker von der PCMCIA-Karte trennen wollen, so drücken Sie vor-
sichtig die beiden seitlichen Verriegelungshaken zusammen und ziehen Sie den
Stecker vorsichtig und langsam aus der PCMCIA-Karte.
Achtung! Wenden Sie beim Einstecken und Abstecken des kleinen
Spezialsteckers keinerlei Gewalt an. Aufgrund der Bauart der
PCMCIA-Netzwerkkarte ist kein grösserer und massiverer Stecker
möglich.
Verkanten Sie den Stecker nicht und stecken Sie ihn nur korrekt
herum auf.
Achten Sie auch während dem Betrieb des Produkts darauf, dass der
kleine Spezialstecker nie mechanisch belastet wird!
Anschluss
Starten Sie Ihr Betriebssystem und warten Sie, bis es vollständig geladen ist.
Verbinden Sie den Adapter über den kleinen Spezialstecker mit der PCMCIA-Karte,
falls noch nicht geschehen.
Stecken Sie dann die PCMCIA-Karte korrekt herum in den PCMCIA-Port des
Notebooks ein. Lesen Sie ggf. die Bedienungsanleitung zu Ihrem Notebook, wie man
PCMCIA-Karten korrekt einsetzt.
Nutzen Sie dann zum Anschluss ans Netzwerk entweder den BNC-Anschluss oder
die RJ45-Buchse.
Treiber-Installation
Windows erkennt die PCMCIA-Netzwerkkarte automatisch. Legen Sie die
Treiberdiskette in das Diskettenlaufwerk Ihres PCs ein und folgen Sie allen
Anweisungen von Windows.
Windows 9x/ME benötigt dann ggf. seine Installations-CD, um weitere
Netzwerkkomponenten zu installieren.
Tipps & Hinweise
• Wenn Sie für Ihr Netzwerk einen eigenen Netzwerk- oder Systemadministrator
haben (etwa in einer grösseren Firma), so lassen Sie IHN Anschluss und
Verkabelung übernehmen, bauen Sie die PCMCIA-Netzwerkkarte nicht selbst ein
und verkabeln Sie Ihr Netzwerk nicht selbst.
• Wenn eine Netzwerkkarte einen BNC- und einen Twisted-Pair-Anschluss besitzt
(so wie die hier beiliegende), so darf nur einer der beiden verwendet werden!
• Die angegebene Datenübertragungsrate von 10MBit pro Sekunde (dies sind

etwas über 1MByte) wird normalerweise nicht erreicht. Übertragungsfehler,

gleichzeitige Zugriffe mehrerer Computer, Zugriffe auf die Festplatte (Lesen auf
dem einen Rechner, Schreiben auf dem anderen) usw. verringern diesen theo-
retischen Wert. Praktisch sind effektive Datenübertragungsraten bis etwa
800/900kByte erreichbar.
• Bei Windows95/98 kann es etwas dauern, bis die Rechner im Netzwerk sichtbar
werden. Wenn Sie die Rechner eingeschaltet haben und Windows95/98 auf allen
Rechnern nach ein paar Sekunden geladen ist, können Sie in der Regel nicht
sofort einen anderen Rechner zugreifen.
"Netzwerkumgebung" kann z.B. die Meldung kommen "...Das Netzwerk kann
nicht durchsucht werden...". Es kann unter bestimmten Umständen bis zu zwei
Minuten dauern, bis weitere Rechner erscheinen.
Um Laufwerke und Verzeichnisse für andere Rechner freizugeben, muss die
"Datei- und Druckerfreigabe" aktiviert sein. Sie finden Sie z.B. in der
Systemsteuerung unter "Netzwerk". Wie die Option schon sagt, können Sie auch
Ihren Drucker für die anderen Rechner auf dem Netzwerk freigeben, d.h. Sie
brauchen nicht mehr an jedem PC einen Drucker anschliessen oder gar die
Dateien per Diskette zwischen den Rechnern umkopieren, um sie ausdrucken zu
können.
• Das BNC-Kabel darf nicht direkt an die BNC-Buchse des Adapters angeschlos-
sen werden! Stecken Sie zuerst das BNC-T-Stück auf die BNC-Buchse des
Adapters auf und verriegeln Sie es. An die beiden BNC-Buchsen des T-Stücks
können nun die BNC-Kabel angeschlossen werden (oder ein BNC-Kabel und ein
50-Ohm-Abschlusswiderstand).
• Das BNC-Kabel zwischen den Buchsen der T-Stücke muss mindestens 1m lang
sein. Stehen z.B. zwei Ihrer PCs direkt nebeneinander, darf kein kurzes "Mini"-
Kabel verwendet werden, sonst kann es bei der Übertragung der Daten zu
Störungen kommen, auch die Datenübertragungsrate kann geringer werden.
• Wird das BNC-Kabel an irgendeiner Stelle unterbrochen (z.B. durch Abstecken
des BNC-Kabels irgendwo zwischen zwei PCs), so funktioniert das gesamte
Netzwerk nicht mehr! Gleiches gilt natürlich bei schlechten Kontakten selbstge-
bastelter BNC-Kabel oder gar bei einem Kurzschluss auf dem BNC-Kabel - letz-
terer kann alle Netzwerkkarten des Netzwerks zerstören!
Gehen Sie also beim Selbstbau von BNC-Netzwerkkabeln besonders sorgfältig
vor.
• Bei Windows 98 wird das so beliebte und einfache IPX-Netzwerkprotokoll nicht
installiert. Spiele, die ein IPX-Protokoll benötigen, laufen also nicht! Sie müssen
erst von Hand in der Systemsteuerung/Netzwerk "Hinzufügen" anklicken, dann
"Protokoll" und beim "Hersteller: Microsoft" das "IPX-Netzwerk" auswählen und
installieren.
• Wenn der Rechnerstart bei Windows 98 nun auf einmal viel länger dauert, so
liegt das daran, dass Windows 98 standardmässig das "TCP/IP"-Protokoll instal-
liert.
Dabei ist als Grundeinstellung die Option eingestellt "IP-Adresse automatisch
beziehen". Sie finden diese unter "Systemsteuerung"/"Netzwerk" und dann im
Fenster "Die folgenden Netzwerkkomponenten sind installiert:". Wählen Sie hier
"TCP/IP-> xxxx" (xxxx steht für den Namen der Netzwerkkarte). Nach einem
Mausklick auf "Eigenschaften" erscheint die o.g. Option.
Klicken Sie auf "IP-Adresse festlegen" und geben Sie z.B. eine fiktive IP-Adresse
ein, z.B. 1.1.1.1, den zweiten PC stellen Sie auf 1.1.1.2 ein, usw. usw.
• Entfernen Sie die Netzwerkkarte sicherheitshalber nur bei ausgeschaltetem
Notebook. Durch geöffnete Dateien (wenn z.B. ein anderer PC auf Ihren
Notebook zugreift) könnte es zu Datenverlust kommen.
In der Regel sind kleine Druckknöpfe neben dem PCMCIA-Slot vorhanden. Das
Drücken der Knöpfe trennt die PCMCIA-Karte vom PCMCIA-Stecker im Inneren
des Computers und schiebt sie ein kleines Stück heraus. Danach lässt sich die
PCMCIA-Karte leicht herausziehen.
Bei manchen (kleinen) Notebooks sind z.B. Schieber auf der Unterseite des
Computers oder die Druckknöpfe werden beim ersten Drücken erst ein Stück
weit nach aussen bewegt und eingerastet - erst der zweite Druck auf den Knopf
trennt die PCMCIA-Karte vom internen PCMCIA-Stecker.

Prescribed Use
The product is intended for application in PC-compatible notebook computers with
PCMCIA module and serves to connect the notebook to an existing network.

Safety Instructions
The guarantees become invalid in the event of damage resulting from
non-observance of the operating manual! We do not accept responsi-
bility for such damage!
On one side of the PCMCIA board there is a socket terminal strip to establish the
connections when the board is inserted into the PCMCIA port.
On the other side there is a tiny flat jack. The special connector of the enclosed
adapter has to be plugged into this jack correctly and very carefully. Please make
sure that the connector is not plugged in with force. With the connector being
destroyed, all guarantees become invalid!
If you would like to unplug the connector from the PCMCIA board, please press
together carefully the locking clasps at the sides and carefully pull the connector out
of the PCMCIA board.
Attention! Never plug or unplug the small connector with force. Due
to the design of the PCMCIA network board, it is not posiible to use a
bigger connector.
Do not jam the connector and make sure to insert it in correct orien-
tation!
Make sure also during operation that the small connector is not expo-
sed to mechanical stress!
Connection
Start your operating system and wait until it is loaded completely.
Connect the adapter with the PCMCIA board via the small special connector.
Then, insert the PCMCIA board in the PCMCIA port of the notebook computer with
correct orientation. If necessary, read the operating manual of your notebook com-
puter to know how to insert PCMCIA boards correctly.
Please use either the BNC port or the RJ45 jack for connection to the network.
Driver Installation
Windows automatically recognizes the PCMCIA network board. Insert the driver disk
into the disk drive of your PC and follow all Windows instructions.
Windows 9x/ ME might require its installation CD to install further network compo-
nents.
Tips & Notes
• If there is a special network or system administrator (e.g. in bigger companies),
please let him do the connection and wiring work! Do not connect the PCMCIA
network board yourself and do not wire the network yourself.
• If a network board is equipped with both a BNC and a twisted-pair port (like this
network board), please use only one of them!
• Normally, the indicated data transmission rate of 10MBits per second (slightly

more than 1MByte) is not reached. Transmission errors, access of several PCs
at the same time, access to the hard disk (reading on one PC, writing on the
other) etc. make this theoretical value impossible. In practise, data transmission

rates of approx. 800/ 900kBytes can be reached.

• Windows95/ 98 needs some time until the PCs appear in the network. When the
PCs are switched on and Windows95/ 98 is loaded on all the Ocs after a few
seconds, you normally cannot access another PC at once. When double-clickin
on "Network Neighborhood", for example, you might receive the message
"Cannot Browse Network Neighborhood...". Sometimes, it might last up to two
minutes until further PCs appear in the network.
To release drives and directories for other PCs, the "File and Printer Release" has
to be activated. You can find it under "Control Panel" and "Network". You can
also release your printer for the other PCs in the network. This means, you do not
have to connect one printer per PC or to copy the files via disks between the dif-
ferent PCs anymore in order to print them.
• Do not connect the BNC cable directly to the BNC jack of the adapter! First put
the BNC-T piece onto the BNC jack of the adapter and lock it. The BNC cables (or
one BNC cable and a 50 Ohms load) now can be connected to the two BNC jak-
ks of the T piece.
• The BNC cable between the jacks of the T pieces has to be at least 1m. E.g., if
two of your PCs are located next to each other, do not use a short mini cable!
Otherwise, the data transmission might fail or the data transmission rate might
decrease.
• If the BNC cable is interrupted at any point (e.g. due to unplugging the BNC cable
somewhere between two PCs), the whole network does not work anymore! The
same is possible with bad contacts of self-made BNC cables or in case of a
short-circuit on the BNC cable. The latter might destroy all network boards of the
network!
Be especially careful when making BNC network cables yourself.
• At Windows 98, the popular and easy IPX network protocol is not installed. This
means that games requiring an IPX protocol do not work! So, you have to install
it yourself following these steps: Click "Add" under "Control Panel/Network",
then "Protocol" and then choose the "IPX Network" under "Manufacturer:
Microsoft".
• If now it takes longer to start the PC, this is because Windows 98 is installing the
TCP/IP protocol as a standard.
Here, the basic setting is the option "Obtain an IP address automatically". You
can find this under "Control Panel"/"Network" in the window "the following
Network components are installed". Now choose "TCP/ IP-> xxxx" (xxxx is the
name of the network board). The above-mentioned option appears after one
mouse click on "Properties".
Click on "Specify an IP address" and enter a fictitious IP address, e.g. 1.1.1.1,
then 1.1.1.2 for the second PC and so on.
• For safety reasons, only remove the network board with the notebook computer
switched off. Because of open files (e.g. if another PC accesses the notebook)
data loss might occur.
Normally, there are small push-buttons next to the PCMCIA slot. Pressing these
buttons separates the PCMCIA board from the PCMCIA connector inside the
computer and moves it a little bit out of the computer. So, the PCMCIA board can
be easily removed.
Some (smaller) notebook computers e.g. have slides at the bottom of the com-
puter or the push-buttons are moved a bit to the outside and click into place
when pressing them the first time. Only pressing the buttons a second time
separates the PCMCIA board from the internal PCMCIA connector.
