SATA Hard Drive Enclosure

Intended use
A 8.89 cm/3.5" SATA hard disk can be installed in the enclosure. It can be connected to a com-
puter via a USB 3.0 port, a 1394b/FireWire 800 or an eSATA interface. The external wall plug
transformer enclosed is used to supply the power.

Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe
these safety instructions! We do not assume any liability for any consequen-
tial damage!
Nor do we assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by
improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions! In such cases,
the warranty will be null and void.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modifi cation of the product is not permitted for
safety and approval reasons (CE).
• The product is not a toy. Keep devices that operate on the mains voltage out of the
reach of children. Therefore, be especially careful when children are around.
Use the product where it is out of the reach of children.
• The product is only intended for use in dry, indoor locations. No part of the product
should become damp or wet; never handle it if your hands are wet!
Wall plug transformers have the potential to cause a fatal electric shock!
• The design of the wall plug transformer complies with Protection Class II. Use only
a standard mains socket as the power source for the wall plug transformer.
• Use only the wall plug transformer provided to power the hard disk enclosure.
• Do not unplug the wall plug transformer from the mains socket by pulling on the
cable. Hold it by the sides of the casing and then unplug it from the mains socket.
• If the wall plug transformer is damaged, do not touch it; there is danger to life from
electric shock!
First, switch off the mains voltage to the socket to which the wall plug transformer
is connected (switch off at the corresponding circuit breaker or, for example re-
move the safety fuse or switch off at the corresponding RCD protective switch, so
the socket is fully disconnected).
You can then unplug the wall plug transformer from the mains socket. Dispose of
the faulty wall plug transformer in an environment-friendly way, do not use it any
more. Replace it by a wall plug transformer of the same design.
• Do not leave packaging material carelessly lying around, since it could become a
dangerous plaything for children.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental
falls, even from a low height.

• Turn the enclosure around, so that the underneath is at the top. Remove the screws located
there.

• Pull out the drawer from the enclosure, taking note of the correct orientation.
• Connect a SATA hard drive to the wide SATA power plug and the SATA data cable. Pay atten-
tion to the connector's correct orientation and do not use any force!
• Secure the SATA hard drive with the 4 large screws provided in the drawer.
• Insert the drawer, with the correct orientation, back into the enclosure. The small transparent
opening on the top of the enclosure has to be above the circuit board, as this is where the
LED will be visible.
• Secure the drawer in the enclosure using the 4 small screws.
• Finally, stick the rubber feet to the bottom of the enclosure.
Driver Installation
Your operating system already contains the drivers for the hard drive enclosure, which is why
there is no data carrier with drivers enclosed in the delivery.
Please note that a suitable controller is required for USB 3.0 operation (e.g. integrated in many
modern motherboards or an upgrade is available using an additional plug-in card). The same
applies for 1394b/FireWire 800 or eSATA.
Connection
• Switch on your computer, if you have not yet done so, and wait until the operating system has
fi nished loading.
• Connect the low voltage plug from the enclosed wall plug transformer to the corresponding
socket on the back of the hard disk enclosure.
Slide the appropriate plug adapter for your mains socket on to the wall plug transformer, until
it clicks into place.
• Connect the wall plug transformer to the mains voltage; i.e. plug it into a mains socket.
• Connect the hard drive enclosure to the computer. For this purpose, use either the USB 3.0
connection port, the 1394b/FireWire 800 connection or the eSATA port.

• Switch on the hard drive enclosure, by moving the On/Off switch on the rear to the "ON" posi-
tion.
• Windows automatically detects the hard drive enclosure on initial start-up and completes the
driver installation (the drivers are included in the operating system).
A new hard drive has to be partitioned and formatted fi rst, before the drive is displayed in
Explorer and can be used, see next section.
Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Drive
• In Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, partitioning and formatting can be done easily
via the Control Panel (via Computer Management/Disk Management).
• After partitioning, the newly created partition has to be formatted (fast formatting is suffi cient;
"normal" formatting may take a long time to complete, depending on the size of the hard
drive).
When using the eSATA port, make sure that this supports so-called "hot swapping"
(connection / disconnection during operation).
If this is not the case, then, sometimes, when connecting to a computer that is
already running, the hard drive enclosure with its internal hard drive will not be de-
tected.
Any disconnection during operation could lead to a loss of data.
If you are not sure whether the eSATA port on your computer supports "hot swap-
ping", you should only connect or disconnect the hard drive enclosure after the com-
puter has been switched off.
This limitation does not apply to USB 3.0 or 1394b/FireWire 800.
Important!
Only connect the hard drive enclosure to one of the available ports on the computer.
Never use the USB 3.0, the 1394b/FireWire800 and/or the eSATA connection ports
simultaneously!
You can also connect the hard drive enclosure to a USB 2.0 port on your computer,
if it does not have a USB 3.0 port. In this case, the maximum speed for the data
transmission will, of course, be correspondingly lower.
If you are using the 1394b-/FireWire 800 port, one of the two sockets must be con-
nected to the computer. You may connect an additional external hard drive to the
second 1394b/FireWire 800 socket.
