1. Bestimmungsgemäße Verwendung
Das Produkt eignet sich für den Einbau einer 6,35 cm (2,5") SATA-Festplatte. Der Betrieb erfolgt über eine
USB2.0-/USB1.1-Schnittstelle. Die Stromversorgung erfolgt über USB.
Aus Sicherheits- und Zulassungsgründen (CE) ist das eigenmächtige Umbauen und/oder Verändern des
Produktes nicht gestattet. Eine andere Verwendung als oben beschrieben ist nicht erlaubt und kann zur
Beschädigung des Produkts führen. Darüber hinaus ist dies mit Gefahren, wie z. B. Kurzschluss, Brand,
Stromschlag usw. verbunden. Lesen Sie die Bedienungsanleitung genau durch und bewahren Sie diese für
späteres Nachschlagen auf.

Feuchtigkeit ausgesetzt werden.
• Gehen Sie vorsichtig mit dem Produkt um, durch Stöße, Schläge oder dem Fall aus bereits geringer Höhe
wird es beschädigt.
• Verwenden Sie das Produkt niemals gleich dann, wenn es von einem kalten in einen warmen Raum
gebracht wird. Das dabei entstehende Kondenswasser kann unter Umständen das Produkt zerstören.
Lassen Sie das Produkt zuerst auf Zimmertemperatur kommen, bevor es angeschlossen und verwendet
wird. Dies kann unter Umständen mehrere Stunden dauern.
• Vermeiden Sie folgende widrige Umgebungsbedingungen am Aufstellungsort oder beim Transport:
- Nässe oder zu hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit
- Extreme Kälte (<5°C) oder Hitze (>35°C), direkte Sonneneinstrahlung
- Staub oder brennbare Gase, Dämpfe oder Lösungsmittel
- starke Vibrationen, Stöße, Schläge
- starke Magnetfelder, wie in der Nähe von Maschinen oder Lautsprechern
• Achten Sie beim Aufstellen des Produkts darauf, dass die Kabel nicht geknickt oder gequetscht werden.
• Bewegen Sie das Produkt mit der eingebauten Festplatte nicht, wenn diese in Betrieb ist. Durch
Bewegungen bei Betrieb könnte der Schreib-/Lesekopf auf der Magnetscheibe aufsetzen. Dadurch ist
nicht nur Datenverlust möglich, sondern es besteht auch die Gefahr der Beschädigung der Festplatte.
Sonstiges
• Wartung, Anpassungs- und Reparaturarbeiten dürfen nur von einem Fachmann bzw. einer Fachwerkstatt
durchgeführt werden.
• Sollten Sie noch Fragen haben, die in dieser Bedienungsanleitung nicht beantwortet werden, so wenden
Sie sich bitte an unseren technischen Kundendienst oder andere Fachleute.
4. Einbau einer 6,35 cm (2,5") SATA-Festplatte
1. Lösen Sie die beiden Schrauben links und rechts des Mini-USB-Anschlusses mit einem
Kreuzschlitzschraubendreher und entnehmen Sie die Anschlussleiste.
2. Stecken Sie die Festplatte korrekt auf die Anschlussleiste (SATA-Daten-/Stromanschluss) der Platine auf.
3. Schieben Sie die Festplatte mit der Anschlussleiste in das Gehäuse. Achten Sie darauf, dass das Gehäuse
komplett geschlossen ist.
4. Schrauben Sie die Anschlussleiste wieder mit beiden Schrauben fest.
5. Anschluss
Es gibt zwei verschiedene Arten von USB-Ports:
• Low-Power-USB-Port
Dieser kann einen Strom von max. 100 mA liefern, z.B. der USB-Port einer Tastatur oder der USB-Port eines
USB-Hubs ohne Netzteil. Solche Anschlüsse sind für den Betrieb der externen Festplatte ungeeignet.
• High-Power-USB-Port
Ein solcher USB-Port kann einen Strom von max. 500 mA liefern, z.B. ein USB-Port des Mainboards oder
der USB-Port eines USB-Hubs mit eigenem Netzteil.
• Die meisten 6,35 cm (2,5") Festplatten benötigen beim Start einen Strom von
ca. 1 A und bei Betrieb ca. 400-500 mA. Daher reicht ein „Low-Power-USB-Port"
zur Stromversorgung nicht aus. Außerdem benötigt die Steuerplatine innen im
Festplattengehäuse ebenfalls eine gewisse Menge Strom (ca. 100 mA).
• Deshalb liefert auch ein einzelner High-Power-USB-Port beim Starten/Hochfahren der
Festplatte zu wenig Strom. Dies kann dazu führen, dass die Festplatte nicht startet oder
leise klackernde Geräusche macht.
• Manche USB-Ports liefern auch mehr als 500 mA, obwohl dies außerhalb des Standards
liegt.
• Aus diesem Grund verfügt das mitgelieferte USB-Kabel über zwei USB-Stecker Typ A.
1. Verbinden Sie zuerst die beiden USB-Stecker Typ A mit zwei freien USB-Ports Ihres Computers (oder eines
USB-Hubs mit eigenem Netzteil).
2. Verbinden Sie erst danach den USB-Mini-Stecker mit dem Festplattengehäuse.

• Dadurch addiert sich der Strom beider USB-Ports (500 mA + 500 mA = 1 A), der Betrieb der
externen Festplatte ist sichergestellt.
• Manche Notebooks liefern an ihren USB-Anschlüssen weniger als 500 mA pro Port. In
diesem Fall könnte der Betrieb der Festplatte nicht möglich sein (Festplatte läuft nicht an,
wird nicht erkannt, oder Ähnliches). Verwenden Sie in diesem Fall einen externen USB-Hub
mit eigenem Netzteil.
3. Die grüne LED neben dem Mini-USB-Anschluss blinkt bei Lese- und Schreibzugriffen.
6. Treiber installieren
Die Treiber für Windows 2000, XP und Vista™ sind im Betriebssystem integriert. Verbinden Sie das externe
Festplattengehäuse mit der eingebauten Festplatte mit Ihrem Computer, das Gerät wird automatisch erkannt
und die benötigten Treiber werden installiert.
7. Festplatte partitionieren und formatieren
Eine neue Festplatte muss partitioniert und formatiert werden, bevor sie benutzt werden kann.
• Bei Windows 2000 und XP™ ist dies sehr leicht über die Computerverwaltung möglich (klicken Sie in
der Systemsteuerung auf „Verwaltung", dann auf „Computerverwaltung", „Datenspeicher" und zuletzt
auf „Datenträgerverwaltung"). Wählen Sie dort die richtige Festplatte aus und legen Sie eine neue
Partition an. Anschließend ist diese zu formatieren (Schnellformatierung genügt, andernfalls dauert der
Formatiervorgang sehr lange!). Bei Windows Vista™ funktioniert dies ähnlich.
• Informationen zur Partitionierung und Formatierung bei den restlichen unterstützten Betriebssystemen
finden Sie entweder in der beiliegenden Herstelleranleitung oder in der Anleitung bzw. dem Hilfe-Menü des
jeweiligen Betriebssystems.
8. Tipps und Hinweise
• USB-Geräte erlauben das Ein- und Ausstecken während des Betriebs.
• Beachten Sie dabei, dass evtl. Dateien beschädigt werden könnten oder Windows abstürzen könnte, wenn
bei einer Datenübertragung das Verbindungskabel herausgezogen wird (bzw. das Gehäuse ausgeschaltet
oder das Netzteil abgesteckt wird).
• Bei Windows XP™ erscheint bei USB-Betrieb ein Pfeil-Symbol in der Menüleiste, über das man Windows
anweisen kann, das Gerät zu „trennen", die Datenübertragungen also so zu beenden, dass man das
Verbindungskabel gefahrlos abstecken kann.
• USB 2.0-Geräte sind abwärtskompatibel. Das bedeutet, dass das Festplattengehäuse mit der eingebauten
Festplatte auch an herkömmlichen „langsamen" USB1.1-Ports funktioniert, dann aber nur in der maximalen
USB1.1-Geschwindigkeit (effektiv ca. 800 kByte/s bis 1 MByte/s).
• Bei USB 2.0 sind mehrere MBytes/s möglich.
9. Reinigung
Bevor Sie das Gerät reinigen, trennen Sie es von der Stromversorgung. Zur Reinigung des Produkts genügt
ein trockenes, weiches und fusselfreies Tuch.
10. Entsorgung
Im Interesse unserer Umwelt und um die verwendeten Rohstoffe möglichst vollständig zu
recyclen, ist der Verbraucher aufgefordert, gebrauchte und defekte Geräte zu den öffentlichen
Sammelstellen für Elektroschrott zu bringen.
Das Zeichen der durchgestrichenen Mülltonne mit Rädern bedeutet, dass dieses Produkt an einer
Sammelstelle für Elektronikschrott abgegeben werden muss.

1. Intended use
The product is designed for installation of a 6.35 cm (2.5") SATA hard drive. It can be operated via a USB2.0/
USB1.1 interface. Power supply is provided via USB.
Unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the device are inadmissible because of safety and approval
reasons (CE). Any usage other than described above is not permitted and can damage the product and lead to
associated risks such as short-circuit, fire, electric shock, etc. Please read the operating instructions thoroughly
and keep them for further reference.

3. Safety instructions
We do not assume liability for resulting damages to property or personal injury if the
product has been abused in any way or damaged by improper use or failure to observe
these operating instructions. The warranty/ guarantee will then expire!
The icon with exclamation mark indicates important information in the operating
instructions. Carefully read the whole operating instructions before operating the device,
otherwise there is risk of danger.

Product safety
• When used in conjunction with other devices, observe the operating instructions and safety notices of
connected devices.
• The product must not be subjected to heavy mechanical stress.
• The product must not be exposed it to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, intense vibration, or
dampness.
• Handle the product carefully, it can be damaged by impacts, blows or by falling from a low height.
• Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room to a warm one. The
condensation that forms might destroy your unit. Allow the product to reach room temperature, before
connecting it to the power supply and putting it in to use. This may take several hours.
• Avoid the following unfavourable environmental conditions at the installation location and during
transportation:
- Damp or excess air humidity
- Extreme cold (<5°C) or heat (>35°C), direct sunlight,
- dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows,
- Strong magnetic fields such as those found in the vicinity of machinery or loudspeakers
• When installing the device, make sure the cables are not bent or jammed.
• Do not move the product with an installed hard disc when the latter is in operation. Movement during
operation can cause the read/write on the magnetic disc to make contact; this could cause not only data
loss but could also damage the hard drive.
Miscellaneous
• Servicing, adjustment or repair works must only be carried out by a specialist/ specialist workshop.
• If any questions arise that are not answered in this operating instruction, contact our Technical Advisory
Service or other experts.
4. Installation of a 6.35 cm (2.5") SATA hard drive
1. Loosen the two screws on the left and right sides of the mini USB port using a Phillips screwdriver and
remove the terminal block.
2. Correctly plug the hard drive onto the terminal block (SATA data/power supply connection) of the circuit
board.
3. Slide the hard drive with the terminal block into the housing. Make sure that the housing is closed
completely.
4. Screw the terminal block back onto its base tightly, using the two screws.
5. Connection
There are two different types of USB ports:
• Low-power USB Port
Can supply a maximum power of 100 mA, e.g. the USB port for a keyboard or the USB port for a USB hub
without power unit. Such connections are not appropriate for operating the external hard drive!
• High-power USB Port
Can supply a maximum power of 500 mA, e.g. the USB port on the motherboard or the USB port on a USB
hub with its own power unit.
• As most of 6.35 cm (2.5") hard drives require a current of approx. 1 A for start up, and
approx. 400-500 mA for operation, a low power USB port is not suitable for supplying
power to this enclosure! Furthermore, the control circuit board inside the hard disk
enclosure also requires a certain current (approx. 100 mA).
• Therefore, just one single high power USB port cannot supply enough current to
start/ boot the hard drive. This can prevent the hard drive from starting or cause a low
clicking noise.
• Some USB ports supply more than 500 mA, although this is not standard.
• Therefore, the USB cable provided has two USB type A connectors.
1. First connect both type A USB-plugs to two free USB ports on your computer (or to a USB hub with its own
power unit).
2. Only after this the mini-plug should be connected to the hard drive enclosure.

• Thus, the current of both USB ports is added (500 mA + 500 mA = 1 A) and the operation of
the external hard drive is ensured.
• Some notebooks provide less than 500 mA to their USB-ports. In such cases, operating the
Version 10/09 hard drive might be impossible (disc does not rotate, is not initialised or similar). In this case,
an external USB hub with its own power supply must be used.
3. The green LED next to the USB Mini connection will blink with read/write access.
6. Installing the driver
The drivers for Windows 2000, XP and Vista™ are integrated in the resp. operating systems. Connect the
external hard drive housing with the integrated hard drive to your computer; the device is automatically
recognized and the necessary drivers installed.
7. Partitioning / formatting the hard drive
A new hard drive must be partitioned and formatted before it can be used.
• This can be done easily in Windows 2000 and XP™ (click on "administration" in the system settings, then
"computer administration", "data storage" and finally on "drive administration"). This is where you select the
correct hard drive and create a new partition. Allow the system to format the hard drive (a quick formatting
is sufficient, otherwise, the formatting procedure takes a very long time!). The procedure is quite similar in
Windows Vista™.
• You can find information on partitioning and formatting for other operating systems in the enclosed
manufacturer's instructions or in the instructions and/or the help menu of the relevant operating system.
8. Tips & Notes
• USB devices can be connected and disconnected during operation.
• You should, however, take into account that data may be corrupted or the operating system may crash if
the connection cable is disconnected while data are being transferred (or the cabinet is switched off or the
power unit is disconnected).
• In Windows XP™, an arrow symbol is displayed in the menu bar when a USB device is in operation. Click
this arrow symbol to "separate" the device, i.e. to terminate data transmission, so you can disconnect the
connection cable without risking losing data.
• USB2.0 devices are backwards compatible. This means that the hard drive enclosure with the built-in
hard disk will also work with a conventional "slower" USB1.1 port – but in this case only with the maximum
USB1.1 speed (in effect approx. 800 kByte/s to 1 MByte/s).
• Several MBytes/sec is possible with USB 2.0.
9. Cleaning
Before cleaning the device, disconnect it from the power supply. The use of a dry, soft, lint-free cloth is sufficient
to clean the product.
10. Disposal
In order to preserve, protect and improve the quality of environment, protect human health and
utilise natural resources prudently and rationally, the user should return unserviceable product to
relevant facilities in accordance with statutory regulations.
The crossed-out wheeled bin indicates the product needs to be disposed separately and not as
municipal waste.
