External Display for FLARM –
Operation Manual
V 5.1d / 26.02.2007
The display
The "External Display for FLARM" is an external display and operating unit for FLARM™. To a large extent its function and
operation are identical with the original and in accordance with the FLARM manuals. This operation manual only describes
display and sound features that differ from FLARM™.
Control and display elements
o Mode button
o 4 status LEDs (green) vertically arranged
o 12 collision LEDs (red/green) arranged in a circle
o 4 LEDs indicating the relative altitude of the traffic
o Brightness sensor (in the middle of the aircraft symbol)
o Sound emitter (fitted laterally to the housing)
Activation
The external display is powered by the FLARM™. When the FLARM™ is being switched on the display starts with a short
acoustic signal and the two-digit display software version: LED 015° = 1, LED 045° = 2 ... LED 345° = 0) is indicated.
Subsequently, a self test is performed during which all LEDs light up briefly (green/red). After conclusion of the test and
correct communication with FLARM™, the three-digit FLARM software version is consecutively indicated; when this
sequence is complete the external display is ready for use.
After being switched on the display always runs in the "nearest" mode and the volume is set on "loud*.
Display
The 12 direction indicators and the four "above" and "below" LEDs indicate the bearing to the most hazardous object relative
to the flight course over the ground. Analogous to the FLARM™ (from version 2006 on), this indication is bicoloured. When
the display works in the "nearest" mode, a constantly illuminated green indicator shows the vector to the nearest traffic
detected (without warning sound). Should the situation become dangerous, attention is drawn to the hazard in red and a
simultaneous acoustic alarm regardless of which mode has been set.
Depending on the hazard, a single direction indication LED flashes with 2 Hz (moderate danger), 4 Hz (medium danger) or
6 Hz (immediate danger), accompanied by an intermittent acoustic warning signal. Display of the various danger levels differs
from the FLARM™ display, on which several direction indication LEDs may light up at the same time!
Alike FLARM™, the four LEDs for "above" and "below" indicate the vertical bearing relative to the own flight altitude.
In the case of fix obstacles (e.g. power lines, antennas), the two LEDs at the top and the two second from the top flash
alternately. The flashing frequency and tone pitch depend on the danger. Altitude is not indicated for fix obstacles.
The set flight mode (nearest/warning) of a display is independent of the indicated FLARM mode or additional displays.
Configuration
Various values that serve as standard setting during start-up can be set in the external display's setup. In order to enter the
setup, the "Mode" button must be pressed during the start-up process and a short beep will be heard.
The status LEDs signal the setup parameter and the collision LEDs the relevantly set value. To change the parameter, the
"Mode" button must be pressed for 3s. Pressing the button briefly will change the value of the selected parameter.
When all settings have been adjusted, the FLARM and display must be restarted (disconnect and restart).
Whenever two external displays are in operation in a two-seater, the rear display must be configured as "display PAX", so
that only one display configures FLARM at start-up.
